Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Pre-Operation Machinery Inspection

Abstract

Pre-operation machinery inspection is an important farm safety and management practice that helps farmers identify mechanical faults, unsafe conditions, and equipment defects before agricultural machinery is used. Proper inspection of tractors, harvesters, planters, pumps, and other farm machinery can help prevent avoidable breakdowns, operational delays, and accidents. However, inadequate knowledge of inspection procedures may result in the use of defective or poorly maintained machinery. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of pre-operation machinery inspection is therefore important for promoting safe and efficient farm machinery use. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of pre-operation machinery inspection. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of recommended inspection procedures, identify the inspection practices commonly understood and applied by farmers, and assess their knowledge of important machinery components that should be checked before operation. It will also identify areas where farmers may have knowledge gaps concerning machinery safety and inspection requirements. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of pre-operation machinery inspection, machinery safety, engine checks, fuel and fluid levels, tyre condition, brakes, steering systems, hydraulic systems, electrical components, belts, guards, safety devices, lubrication points, warning indicators, and general equipment condition. Information will be obtained from farmers who use agricultural machinery to determine their understanding of inspection procedures and their ability to identify potential mechanical and safety problems before machinery operation. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to determine farmers’ levels of understanding, while relevant inferential statistical methods may be applied to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of pre-operation machinery inspection.The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding pre-operation machinery inspection. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic checks such as fuel, engine oil, tyres, brakes, and general equipment condition, while others may have limited knowledge of hydraulic systems, electrical components, safety guards, warning indicators, and other machinery safety requirements. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps that could increase the likelihood of machinery malfunction, unsafe operation, and avoidable farm accidents. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural machinery service providers, agricultural development agencies, equipment dealers, researchers, cooperatives, and policymakers. It may provide information for developing farmer education programmes on machinery inspection and safe equipment operation. The findings may also assist extension personnel and agricultural organizations in designing practical demonstrations that improve farmers’ ability to identify machinery defects before operation. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of pre-operation machinery inspection is important for promoting safe, efficient, and reliable use of agricultural machinery. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant agricultural organizations strengthen farmer training on machinery inspection procedures, safety checks, equipment maintenance, and identification of mechanical faults. Practical demonstrations and routine safety education should be encouraged to improve farmers’ knowledge and promote responsible use of agricultural machinery.
