Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of irrigation equipment maintenance. Proper maintenance of irrigation equipment is essential for ensuring efficient water delivery, reducing equipment breakdown, extending the useful life of irrigation facilities, and supporting reliable crop production. Adequate knowledge of routine maintenance practices can help farmers identify equipment problems early and maintain irrigation systems in good working condition. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of key irrigation equipment maintenance practices, including cleaning of irrigation components, inspection of pipes and fittings, maintenance of pumps, checking of valves and filters, removal of blockages, detection of leaks, and proper storage of irrigation equipment when not in use. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of routine inspection schedules and basic maintenance procedures required for different irrigation equipment. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of irrigation equipment maintenance. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of irrigation equipment maintenance and identify areas of adequate and inadequate knowledge. It is also expected to provide information on farmers’ understanding of equipment inspection, cleaning, repair, leak detection, filter maintenance, pump care, and other routine procedures that support effective irrigation system operation. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, irrigation development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on farmers’ knowledge of irrigation equipment maintenance. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and demonstrations that improve farmers’ ability to maintain irrigation equipment and identify common operational problems. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of irrigation equipment maintenance is important for promoting efficient and reliable irrigation management. It will recommend regular extension education, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance on equipment inspection, cleaning, servicing, and minor maintenance procedures to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and improve the proper management of irrigation equipment.
