Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Humidity Management in Agricultural Produce Storage

Abstract

The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of humidity management in agricultural produce storage. Humidity management is an important aspect of storage management because excessive or inadequate moisture conditions can affect the quality, safety, and shelf life of stored agricultural produce. Adequate knowledge of humidity management can help farmers maintain suitable storage conditions, minimize moisture-related deterioration, and reduce avoidable post-harvest losses. The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of practices involved in managing humidity within agricultural produce storage facilities. Specific areas will include understanding the effect of humidity on stored produce, monitoring humidity levels, using appropriate humidity measuring devices, maintaining adequate ventilation, preventing moisture accumulation, recognizing signs of moisture-related deterioration, recording storage conditions, and taking appropriate corrective measures. The study will also assess farmers’ knowledge of practices that can help maintain suitable humidity conditions during storage. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of humidity management in agricultural produce storage. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation to determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of the identified humidity management practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of humidity management in agricultural produce storage. The findings may indicate that farmers possess knowledge of basic moisture control practices but have gaps in areas such as humidity monitoring, interpretation of humidity conditions, use of measuring devices, ventilation management, and identification of moisture-related deterioration. The study may also identify specific areas where farmers require additional technical information and practical guidance. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, storage facility operators, and policymakers by providing information on farmers’ knowledge of humidity management. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing appropriate educational programmes and practical demonstrations aimed at improving farmers’ ability to maintain suitable storage conditions and protect agricultural produce from moisture-related losses. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of humidity management is important for maintaining the quality and storage life of agricultural produce. It will recommend that agricultural extension officers strengthen farmers’ education through practical demonstrations, advisory visits, and training on humidity monitoring, ventilation, moisture control, use of measuring devices, and recognition of moisture-related deterioration in stored produce.
