Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Produce Supply Chain Documentation

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of farm produce supply chain documentation. Supply chain documentation involves the preparation, maintenance, and use of records that provide information about the production, handling, storage, transportation, distribution, and marketing of agricultural produce. Proper documentation can improve traceability, accountability, coordination, record keeping, and decision-making within the agricultural supply chain. Farmers therefore require adequate knowledge of relevant documentation practices to participate effectively in organized agricultural markets. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of farm produce supply chain documentation. It will specifically examine farmers’ knowledge of production records, delivery records, transportation documents, inventory records, sales records, receipts, product identification information, and other relevant supply chain documents. The study will also identify farmers’ major sources of information on supply chain documentation and examine the challenges that may limit their knowledge and effective use of such documentation practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ knowledge, awareness, sources of information, and experience with farm produce supply chain documentation. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques may be used where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of farm produce supply chain documentation. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension education, training programmes, market information, and organized agricultural activities are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of relevant documentation procedures. The study may also reveal knowledge gaps concerning the preparation, storage, updating, and use of supply chain records, particularly among farmers with limited access to formal documentation support. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural development organizations, farmers’ associations, produce marketers, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural value-chain development. The findings are expected to identify areas where farmers require additional education and technical support on supply chain documentation. Improved knowledge may help farmers maintain more accurate records, track produce movement, verify transactions, communicate effectively with buyers, and improve their participation in formal agricultural markets. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of supply chain documentation is important for effective management and coordination of farm produce. It will recommend strengthened extension education, practical demonstrations, simplified documentation formats, farmer training programmes, and improved access to relevant market and record-keeping information. Improving farmers’ knowledge of supply chain documentation is expected to contribute to better traceability, accountability, record management, and efficiency within agricultural production and marketing systems.
