Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of farm machinery maintenance practices. Proper maintenance of farm machinery is important for ensuring efficient machine performance, reducing unexpected breakdowns, extending equipment lifespan, and improving the timely completion of farm operations. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate maintenance practices can therefore contribute to effective machinery management and reduced operational costs. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of routine inspection, cleaning, lubrication, tightening of loose components, replacement of worn parts, checking fluid levels, proper storage of machinery, and adherence to manufacturers’ maintenance recommendations. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of preventive maintenance schedules, identification of early signs of machinery faults, safe handling of maintenance tools, and the importance of keeping maintenance records. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers who use farm machinery and equipment in the selected study area. A suitable sampling procedure will be used to select respondents, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of farm machinery maintenance practices. Data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of farm machinery maintenance practices and identify areas where knowledge may be inadequate. It is also expected to show farmers’ understanding of routine servicing, lubrication, cleaning, inspection, replacement of worn components, machinery storage, and preventive maintenance procedures. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, machinery service providers, farmers’ organizations, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural mechanization. The study will provide information that can guide the development of extension programmes and practical demonstrations aimed at improving farmers’ knowledge of machinery maintenance and promoting more efficient use of farm equipment. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of farm machinery maintenance practices is important for maintaining equipment efficiency, reducing breakdowns, and improving the reliability of farm operations. It will recommend that agricultural extension services should provide farmers with practical training, demonstrations, and technical information on routine inspection, servicing, lubrication, fault identification, safe maintenance procedures, and proper machinery storage.
