Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of farm equipment inspection procedures. Proper inspection of farm equipment is important for identifying mechanical faults, detecting worn or damaged components, preventing unexpected breakdowns, and promoting safe and efficient farm operations. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate equipment inspection procedures can therefore contribute to improved machinery performance, reduced maintenance costs, and safer use of agricultural equipment. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of pre-use and routine equipment inspection, checking moving components, examining belts and chains, inspecting tyres and wheels, checking fluid levels, identifying loose or damaged parts, examining electrical components, and assessing general equipment condition. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of inspection schedules, recording identified faults, reporting equipment defects, and taking appropriate corrective actions before machinery is used. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers who own, operate, or use farm equipment in the selected study area. A suitable sampling procedure will be used to select respondents, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of farm equipment inspection procedures. Data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of farm equipment inspection procedures and identify areas where knowledge may be inadequate. It is also expected to show farmers’ understanding of routine inspection activities, identification of equipment defects, inspection schedules, documentation of faults, and appropriate responses to identified mechanical problems. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural mechanization agencies, equipment service providers, farmers’ organizations, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural machinery management. The study will provide information that can guide the development of extension programmes, practical demonstrations, and technical training aimed at improving farmers’ knowledge of equipment inspection and promoting safer machinery use. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of farm equipment inspection procedures is important for maintaining equipment reliability, preventing avoidable breakdowns, and promoting safe farm operations. It will recommend that agricultural extension services should provide farmers with practical training and demonstrations on pre-use inspection, routine equipment checks, fault identification, inspection record keeping, and appropriate corrective measures.
