Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Effective Business Communication in Agriculture

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of effective business communication in agriculture. Effective business communication involves the clear exchange of information between farmers and other agricultural business actors, including buyers, input suppliers, processors, marketers, financial institutions, transporters, extension personnel, and customers. Adequate knowledge of business communication can help farmers convey information clearly, maintain professional relationships, respond to customers, negotiate business arrangements, and coordinate agricultural enterprise activities. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of effective business communication is therefore important for understanding their ability to communicate effectively within the agricultural business environment. The study will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of effective business communication in agriculture. It will specifically assess farmers’ knowledge of clear verbal communication, written communication, active listening, customer communication, professional messaging, information sharing, business enquiries, responding to complaints, communicating prices and product information, and maintaining appropriate communication with agricultural business partners. The study will also examine farmers’ awareness of the importance of effective communication in agricultural marketing and enterprise management. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ knowledge of effective agricultural business communication practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation to determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of effective business communication in agriculture. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of effective business communication. Farmers may demonstrate greater knowledge of face-to-face communication and basic verbal interactions, while knowledge of written communication, professional messaging, customer communication, digital communication, and structured business information sharing may be comparatively limited. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ knowledge of appropriate communication methods for dealing with buyers, suppliers, customers, and other agricultural business actors. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, farmer organizations, agribusiness stakeholders, agricultural development agencies, and other institutions involved in supporting farmers’ enterprise development. The findings are expected to identify areas where farmers require additional education and practical training on business communication. Such information can assist extension personnel in developing training programmes that strengthen farmers’ communication, customer relations, marketing, and business management capabilities. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of effective business communication is important for successful agricultural enterprise management and market participation. It will recommend strengthening extension education on agricultural business communication, providing practical training on verbal and written communication, promoting the use of appropriate digital communication channels, and improving farmers’ knowledge of professional interaction with agricultural business actors. Improving farmers’ communication knowledge is expected to support stronger business relationships and more effective participation in agricultural markets.
