Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Crop Disease Diagnostic Services

Abstract

Crop disease diagnostic services are important for accurate identification and management of diseases that affect agricultural crops. Proper diagnosis enables farmers to distinguish diseases from pest attacks, nutrient deficiencies, and other production problems, thereby supporting the selection of appropriate control measures. Farmers’ knowledge of available diagnostic services can influence their ability to seek timely assistance, obtain accurate disease information, and make informed crop protection decisions. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of crop disease diagnostic services. The study will determine farmers’ level of awareness and understanding of available diagnostic services and examine their knowledge of how and where to obtain assistance when crop diseases occur. It will also identify gaps in farmers’ knowledge that may limit their use of professional crop disease diagnostic support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of crop disease symptoms, disease identification procedures, sample collection and submission, diagnostic laboratories, agricultural extension personnel, plant clinics, research institutions, and other sources of professional diagnostic assistance. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of the importance of laboratory diagnosis, availability of diagnostic services, procedures for accessing services, interpretation of diagnostic results, and the use of diagnostic recommendations in crop disease management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of crop disease diagnostic services. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while knowledge scores and other appropriate statistical techniques may be used to determine farmers’ overall level of knowledge and identify significant differences across relevant farmer characteristics. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of crop disease diagnostic services. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension information, plant health programmes, and professional advisory support may demonstrate higher knowledge of diagnostic procedures and available services. However, limited awareness, inadequate extension contact, distance from diagnostic facilities, cost of services, and limited availability of diagnostic information may constitute barriers to farmers’ effective use of crop disease diagnostic services. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, plant pathologists, crop protection specialists, diagnostic laboratories, plant clinics, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving farmers’ awareness of crop disease diagnostic services and strengthening communication between farmers and professional crop health service providers. The findings may also support the development of accessible diagnostic information and farmer-oriented disease identification programmes. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of crop disease diagnostic services is important for improving farmers’ ability to obtain accurate information and make appropriate disease management decisions. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and crop health institutions strengthen farmer education on available diagnostic services, sample collection procedures, service locations, and the interpretation of diagnostic results. Greater awareness campaigns, practical demonstrations, and improved access to diagnostic facilities should also be promoted to encourage timely and appropriate diagnosis of crop diseases.
