Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agritourism Marketing Channels
Abstract
Agritourism combines agricultural activities with tourism experiences and can provide farmers with opportunities to generate additional income, promote farm products, and connect directly with consumers and visitors. Effective marketing is important for attracting tourists, promoting farm-based experiences, and increasing the visibility of agritourism enterprises. Farmers’ knowledge of available agritourism marketing channels is therefore important for selecting suitable methods of promoting their farms, products, services, and tourism activities. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agritourism marketing channels. It will determine the extent to which farmers understand the different channels available for promoting agritourism products and experiences. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of traditional and digital marketing channels, including direct marketing, farmer cooperatives, tourism agencies, social media platforms, websites, online marketplaces, community events, referrals, signage, and local tourism networks. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of agritourism marketing, marketing channels, direct marketing, digital marketing, social media promotion, online platforms, tourism agencies, farmer cooperatives, community events, farm signage, customer referrals, promotional activities, farm-based tourism, visitor engagement, and agritourism enterprise development. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information about agritourism marketing and identify areas where inadequate knowledge may limit their ability to promote agritourism activities effectively. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of agritourism marketing channels, sources of marketing information, and level of awareness and use of different promotional methods. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine farmers’ level of knowledge and examine variations in knowledge across relevant farmer characteristics. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agritourism marketing channels. Farmers with greater access to agricultural extension information, tourism-related training, digital communication tools, farmer organisations, and marketing advisory services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of available marketing channels. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to digital promotion, online marketing, collaboration with tourism organisations, customer communication, and the promotion of farm-based tourism experiences. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, tourism operators, agritourism organisations, farmer cooperatives, government agricultural and tourism agencies, development organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension education and marketing advisory programmes that promote agritourism development. The findings may also assist relevant stakeholders in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ understanding and use of appropriate marketing channels for agritourism products and services. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of agritourism marketing channels is important for farmers seeking to promote farm-based tourism activities and reach potential visitors and customers. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant tourism organisations provide regular education and practical training on direct, digital, cooperative, and tourism-based marketing channels. Farmers should also be encouraged to explore suitable marketing platforms and establish effective promotional strategies to improve the visibility, customer reach, and commercial potential of agritourism enterprises.
