Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Innovation Recognition Programmes

Abstract

Agricultural innovation recognition programmes are initiatives designed to identify, acknowledge, promote, and encourage farmers who develop or adopt innovative practices, technologies, and approaches in agricultural production. Such programmes may provide opportunities for farmers to showcase successful innovations, receive recognition, access additional support, and share useful practices with other farmers. Farmers’ knowledge of these programmes is important because awareness and understanding can influence their participation and ability to benefit from available recognition opportunities. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural innovation recognition programmes. It will examine farmers’ awareness and understanding of existing innovation recognition initiatives and determine their level of knowledge regarding the purpose, eligibility requirements, participation procedures, and potential benefits of such programmes. The study will also identify the major sources through which farmers obtain information about agricultural innovation recognition opportunities. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural innovation awards, farmer innovation competitions, recognition schemes, innovation showcases, agricultural exhibitions, innovation challenges, and other programmes that recognize outstanding agricultural practices and innovations. Areas of assessment will include awareness of programme objectives, eligibility criteria, nomination procedures, application requirements, selection processes, recognition benefits, and opportunities for sharing successful innovations. Farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services, cooperatives, agricultural organizations, media, and digital information platforms will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to assess farmers’ levels of awareness and knowledge. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to agricultural information and their knowledge of agricultural innovation recognition programmes. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding agricultural innovation recognition programmes. Farmers with greater exposure to extension services, agricultural exhibitions, farmer organizations, digital information platforms, and agricultural development programmes may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge than farmers with limited exposure. The study may also reveal that some farmers possess innovative agricultural practices but have limited knowledge of available programmes through which their innovations can be formally recognized and promoted. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural innovation organizations, research institutions, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for improving awareness and communication about agricultural innovation recognition programmes. The findings may also assist programme organizers in developing accessible information channels and extension strategies that encourage more farmers to participate in innovation recognition initiatives. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of agricultural innovation recognition programmes is important for encouraging the identification, promotion, and wider dissemination of useful agricultural innovations. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and programme organizers provide regular information and awareness activities on available recognition opportunities. Extension agents should also assist farmers in understanding eligibility requirements, application procedures, and participation processes to improve access to agricultural innovation recognition programmes.
