Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge Acquired Through Audio Agricultural Advisories

Abstract

Audio agricultural advisories are increasingly used as a means of providing farmers with timely and accessible information on agricultural production, particularly in rural communities where access to conventional extension services may be limited. Through radio programmes, recorded messages, mobile audio platforms, and other audio-based channels, farmers can receive information on improved farming practices, crop production, pest management, weather conditions, input use, and marketing. Assessing the knowledge acquired through these advisories is important for determining their usefulness as agricultural extension communication tools. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge acquired through audio agricultural advisories. Specifically, the study will examine farmers’ exposure to audio agricultural advisory messages, assess their level of understanding of the information provided, determine the areas of agricultural knowledge gained through the advisories, and assess farmers’ ability to recall and apply the information received to their farming activities. The study will focus on farmers’ exposure to audio advisories, frequency of listening, accessibility of audio agricultural information, understanding of advisory messages, knowledge retention, recall of agricultural recommendations, and application of acquired knowledge. It will also consider the types of agricultural information received through audio advisories, including crop production, soil management, pest and disease control, improved inputs, climate information, post-harvest practices, and agricultural marketing. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to audio agricultural advisories and their level of knowledge acquired from the information provided. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, as well as appropriate inferential statistical techniques to examine relationships between exposure to audio advisories and farmers’ knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who regularly access and listen to audio agricultural advisories may demonstrate better knowledge of recommended agricultural practices than farmers with limited exposure. The findings may also indicate variations in knowledge acquisition according to listening frequency, accessibility of advisory programmes, clarity of messages, relevance of information, and farmers’ ability to recall the recommendations provided through audio platforms. The study will be useful to agricultural extension agents, farmers, agricultural development agencies, radio broadcasters, government institutions, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving the design, content, language, frequency, and delivery of audio agricultural advisories. The findings may also assist extension providers in identifying effective ways of using audio communication to reach farmers who have limited access to face-to-face extension services. The study concludes that audio agricultural advisories can serve as an important channel for delivering agricultural knowledge to farmers when the information is accessible, understandable, relevant, and regularly provided. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension organisations strengthen audio-based advisory programmes, use clear and locally appropriate communication, provide practical and relevant agricultural information, and regularly assess farmers’ knowledge gained from audio advisories to improve the effectiveness of agricultural extension communication.
