Assessment of Farmers’ Awareness of Agricultural Produce Quality Standards

Abstract

Agricultural produce quality standards are established requirements used to guide the production, handling, processing, storage, packaging, and marketing of agricultural products to ensure that produce meets acceptable levels of quality and safety. Compliance with quality standards can improve the marketability of agricultural products, reduce post-harvest losses, protect consumers, and increase farmers’ access to profitable markets. Farmers’ awareness of these standards is therefore important for promoting appropriate production and post-harvest practices and improving the quality of agricultural produce. This study will assess farmers’ awareness of agricultural produce quality standards. It will examine the level of farmers’ knowledge and awareness of the quality requirements applicable to agricultural products and determine their understanding of practices required to maintain produce quality from production to marketing. The study will also assess farmers’ sources of information on agricultural produce quality standards and their exposure to relevant agricultural extension information. The study will focus on farmers’ awareness of produce grading, sorting, cleanliness, moisture requirements, proper harvesting, handling, packaging, storage, transportation, labeling, and food safety standards. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of acceptable quality characteristics, contamination prevention, pesticide residue management, proper use of agricultural inputs, and market requirements for agricultural produce. Attention will be given to farmers’ exposure to extension training, farm visits, demonstrations, cooperatives, agricultural markets, media programmes, and other sources of information on quality standards. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their awareness and knowledge of agricultural produce quality standards. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between farmers’ awareness and selected sources of quality-standard information. Farmers’ awareness levels across different quality standards will also be assessed. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ awareness of agricultural produce quality standards. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services, training, market information, cooperative activities, and practical demonstrations may demonstrate higher levels of awareness. However, limited access to reliable quality-standard information, inadequate extension contact, poor market linkages, insufficient training, and limited understanding of technical requirements may reduce farmers’ awareness of some quality standards. Differences may also exist according to the type of agricultural produce handled by farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, produce marketers, agricultural cooperatives, government agricultural agencies, food safety authorities, agricultural processors, researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders. The findings may provide useful information for developing extension programmes and awareness campaigns that improve farmers’ understanding of quality requirements and encourage appropriate production and post-harvest practices. Improved awareness may also support better market participation and acceptance of agricultural produce. The study concludes that farmers’ awareness of agricultural produce quality standards is important for maintaining product quality, improving market opportunities, and supporting safe agricultural production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through training, demonstrations, farm visits, market-oriented advisory services, and accessible information on relevant quality standards. Greater collaboration among extension agencies, regulatory bodies, farmer organizations, processors, and agricultural markets should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to current and practical quality-standard information.
