Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Runoff Control Measures on Farmlands

Abstract

Runoff control is an important component of farmland conservation because uncontrolled surface water can cause soil erosion, nutrient loss, sedimentation, and degradation of agricultural land. Appropriate runoff control measures can reduce the speed and volume of water moving across farmland, improve water infiltration, conserve fertile topsoil, and support sustainable crop production. Farmers’ adoption of effective runoff control practices is therefore important for maintaining soil productivity and reducing the effects of water-related land degradation. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of runoff control measures on farmlands. The study will determine the level of farmers’ adoption of different runoff control practices, identify the measures commonly used by farmers, and assess the extent to which these practices are applied in farm management. It will also identify the major challenges farmers encounter in adopting and maintaining runoff control measures on their farmlands. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as contour farming, grass strips, vegetative barriers, stone bunds, check dams, terraces, cover cropping, mulching, drainage channels, water diversion structures, and other suitable runoff management techniques. It will also examine farmers’ practices relating to the establishment, maintenance, and regular use of runoff control measures. Factors such as access to information, availability of materials, labour requirements, farm size, and perceived benefits will be considered in assessing adoption. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on the types, frequency, and level of adoption of runoff control measures. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and other appropriate statistical techniques to assess adoption levels and identify patterns in the use of runoff control practices among farmers. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of runoff control measures among farmers. Some farmers may regularly use practices that are relatively easy to establish and maintain, while others may have limited adoption due to labour requirements, inadequate materials, limited technical knowledge, financial constraints, or lack of suitable farmland conditions. Farmers with greater access to agricultural information and conservation support may demonstrate higher levels of adoption of appropriate runoff control practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil and water conservation agencies, environmental organisations, agricultural development programmes, farmers’ associations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information on existing adoption patterns and challenges and may support the development of practical interventions for improving runoff management and protecting agricultural land from erosion. The study concludes that the adoption of appropriate runoff control measures is important for reducing soil erosion and maintaining productive farmlands. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, farm visits, training programmes, and community-based conservation activities. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable runoff control measures according to their farm conditions and to maintain existing conservation structures for effective and sustainable farmland management.
