Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Orchard Management Practices

Abstract

Improved orchard management practices involve the application of recommended techniques for establishing, maintaining, protecting, and managing fruit trees to promote healthy growth, productivity, fruit quality, and sustainable orchard production. Appropriate practices such as pruning, irrigation, nutrient management, pest and disease control, weed management, mulching, and proper harvesting can improve orchard performance and reduce production losses. Farmers’ adoption of these practices is therefore important for maintaining productive and profitable fruit orchards. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of improved orchard management practices. It will examine the extent to which farmers apply recommended orchard management techniques and determine the level of adoption of different practices. The study will also assess farmers’ sources of orchard management information and their access to agricultural extension services and technical guidance. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as improved orchard establishment, appropriate tree spacing, pruning, grafting, irrigation, fertilizer and manure application, mulching, weed management, pest and disease control, soil management, orchard sanitation, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. Attention will also be given to farmers’ frequency of applying these practices, access to improved orchard management inputs, and knowledge of the benefits associated with recommended orchard management techniques. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from orchard farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their adoption of improved orchard management practices, sources of information, and access to extension services. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine factors associated with farmers’ adoption of improved orchard management practices. Adoption levels across different orchard management practices will also be assessed. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of improved orchard management practices among farmers. Farmers who have better access to extension services, improved inputs, technical information, and orchard management training may demonstrate higher levels of adoption. However, inadequate extension contact, high cost of inputs, limited access to irrigation facilities, shortage of improved planting materials, inadequate technical knowledge, pest and disease challenges, and limited access to orchard management equipment may restrict the adoption of some recommended practices. The study will be useful to orchard farmers, agricultural extension agents, horticultural organizations, farmer associations, government agricultural agencies, research institutions, input suppliers, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The findings may provide useful information for developing extension programmes and support initiatives that encourage the adoption of improved orchard management practices. Increased adoption may contribute to improved tree health, higher fruit yields, better produce quality, reduced production losses, and improved farm income. The study concludes that adoption of improved orchard management practices is important for maintaining productive and sustainable fruit production systems. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, orchard-based training, farm visits, and continuous technical advisory services. Improved access to quality planting materials, appropriate inputs, irrigation facilities, management equipment, and relevant technical information should also be promoted to support wider adoption of recommended orchard management practices.
