Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Digital Financial Services for Farm Transactions
Abstract
Digital financial services have become increasingly relevant to agricultural activities by providing farmers with electronic methods for making and receiving payments, transferring funds, accessing financial accounts, and conducting other farm-related transactions. These services include mobile money, electronic bank transfers, mobile banking applications, point-of-sale services, digital wallets, and other electronic payment platforms. Their use may improve the speed, convenience, security, and accessibility of financial transactions associated with farming activities. Assessing farmers’ adoption of these services is therefore important for understanding the extent to which digital financial technologies are being incorporated into agricultural transactions. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of digital financial services for farm transactions. It will examine the level of farmers’ use of digital financial services and determine the extent to which these services are applied in different farm-related financial activities. The study will also assess farmers’ awareness, frequency of use, preferred digital financial services, and factors influencing their adoption of electronic financial transactions. The study will focus on farmers’ use of mobile banking, mobile money, electronic bank transfers, point-of-sale services, digital wallets, and other digital payment platforms. It will examine their use for purchasing agricultural inputs, paying farm labourers, receiving payments for farm produce, settling transportation costs, paying suppliers, transferring funds, and recording financial transactions. The study will also consider farmers’ access to smartphones, internet services, banking facilities, digital literacy, transaction costs, network availability, electricity supply, security concerns, and trust in digital financial platforms. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their awareness, access, frequency of use, and adoption of digital financial services for farm transactions. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine relationships between relevant variables and farmers’ adoption of digital financial services. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of digital financial services among farmers. Farmers with greater access to smartphones, reliable network services, financial institutions, digital training, and affordable transaction platforms may demonstrate higher levels of adoption. The study may also identify challenges such as limited digital literacy, poor network connectivity, transaction charges, inadequate access to banking services, concerns about fraud and security, and limited confidence in electronic financial platforms as constraints affecting adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, financial institutions, fintech providers, agricultural cooperatives, government agencies, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide information on the financial technologies currently accessible to farmers and the challenges affecting their use for farm transactions. Agricultural extension agents and financial service providers may use the findings to develop appropriate digital financial education and advisory programmes that can improve farmers’ ability to conduct secure and efficient electronic transactions. The study concludes that the adoption of digital financial services can be an important component of modern agricultural financial management by providing farmers with convenient and efficient methods of conducting farm-related transactions. It is therefore recommended that relevant stakeholders strengthen farmers’ digital financial literacy through extension education, practical training, demonstrations, and awareness programmes. Financial institutions and digital service providers should also improve network accessibility, transaction security, affordability, and user-friendly services to encourage wider adoption of digital financial services among farmers.
