Effect of Terminal Bonus Structures on Participating Life Insurance Benefits

Abstract

Terminal bonus structures represent additional benefits that may be payable to policyholders of participating life insurance contracts when a policy matures, is surrendered, or becomes a claim. Unlike regular bonuses, terminal bonuses are generally determined near the end of the policy period and may reflect the financial performance of the participating fund and the insurer’s surplus distribution approach. Their structure can therefore influence the final benefits received by policyholders and is an important consideration in the valuation of participating life insurance contracts. The study examines the effect of terminal bonus structures on participating life insurance benefits. It will assess how variations in terminal bonus rates and allocation structures influence the total benefits payable to policyholders. The study will also examine the relationship between terminal bonuses, policy duration, accumulated bonuses, investment returns, participating fund performance, and final policy benefits. The study will focus on terminal bonus structures, participating life insurance benefits, bonus rates, policy maturity values, accumulated bonuses, investment returns, participating funds, policy duration, and surplus distribution. Actuarial valuation techniques will be used to estimate policy benefits under alternative terminal bonus assumptions. Comparative and sensitivity analyses will be applied to determine how changes in terminal bonus structures affect the value of participating life insurance benefits. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant life insurance and financial data, including policy premiums, policy durations, accumulated bonuses, terminal bonus rates, investment returns, fund performance, and maturity benefits, will be analysed. Descriptive statistics, actuarial present value calculations, benefit projection, comparative analysis, scenario analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to evaluate the effect of terminal bonus structures on participating life insurance benefits. The study is expected to reveal that terminal bonus structures may have a significant effect on the final benefits received under participating life insurance policies. Higher terminal bonus rates may increase projected maturity and surrender benefits, while lower rates may reduce the additional benefits payable to policyholders. The magnitude of the effect may depend on investment performance, accumulated bonuses, policy duration, premium contributions, surplus allocation practices, and the financial performance of the participating fund. The study is expected to be useful to actuaries, life insurance companies, product developers, financial managers, underwriters, and policy valuation analysts. The findings may support the design of participating insurance products, bonus allocation decisions, benefit projection, liability estimation, and financial planning. The study may also assist insurers in assessing the financial implications of terminal bonus structures and maintaining appropriate assumptions for future policy benefits. The study concludes that terminal bonus structures are important components of participating life insurance benefit determination because they can materially influence the final value of policyholder benefits. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly review terminal bonus assumptions, consider participating fund performance when determining bonus structures, and apply appropriate actuarial sensitivity analysis to assess their effects on policyholder benefits.
