Effect of Survival Periods on Life Insurance Benefit Valuation

Abstract

The study examines the effect of survival periods on life insurance benefit valuation, focusing on how the length of time policyholders are expected to survive influences the actuarial value of life insurance benefits. Survival periods are important in life insurance because the timing of benefit payments depends on whether the insured survives or dies during a specified policy period. Accurate assessment of survival patterns is therefore essential for estimating future benefit payments and determining the financial obligations of life insurance companies. The study will investigate the relationship between survival periods and life insurance benefit valuation by examining how differences in expected survival durations affect the timing and value of insurance benefits. It will assess the effect of survival probabilities over different periods on the expected present value of benefits payable under selected life insurance contracts. The study will also consider how changes in survival assumptions influence the valuation of future policy obligations. The analysis will focus on survival periods, survival probabilities, mortality rates, policy duration, age at entry, benefit amounts, interest rates, and present values. Actuarial life tables and survival-based valuation techniques will be applied to estimate the probability of survival over specified periods and determine the corresponding value of future benefits. Comparative analysis will be used to assess differences in benefit values under alternative survival-period assumptions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant mortality, survival, and life insurance data will be obtained from appropriate secondary sources. Statistical analysis will also be used to examine patterns in the available data. The study is expected to reveal that variations in survival periods have a measurable effect on life insurance benefit valuation. Longer expected survival periods may alter the timing and probability of benefit payments and consequently affect their present value. The findings may also indicate that the effect of survival periods varies according to age at entry, policy duration, benefit structure, mortality assumptions, and interest rate conditions. The findings are expected to provide useful information for life insurers, actuaries, underwriters, and insurance analysts in evaluating life insurance benefits. A better understanding of survival periods may support more accurate benefit valuation, premium calculation, liability estimation, and long-term financial planning. The study may also assist insurers in reviewing survival assumptions when assessing future insurance obligations. The study concludes that survival periods are an important consideration in the valuation of life insurance benefits because they influence the probability and timing of future payments. It is therefore recommended that life insurance companies regularly analyse survival experience and incorporate appropriate survival assumptions into actuarial valuation models to support accurate benefit estimation, adequate liability management, and sustainable insurance operations.
