Effect of Subrogation Recovery Periods on General Insurance Loss Reserves
Abstract
Subrogation recovery periods refer to the length of time required by an insurer to recover amounts paid on claims from responsible third parties after the insurer has settled the insured loss. In general insurance, subrogation recoveries can reduce the net cost of claims and influence the amount of loss liabilities that insurers are required to maintain. The timing of these recoveries is therefore relevant to the estimation and management of general insurance loss reserves. This study will examine the effect of subrogation recovery periods on general insurance loss reserves. It will assess how variations in the time required to obtain subrogation recoveries influence the level and development of loss reserves maintained by insurance companies. The study will also examine differences in reserve requirements associated with short and prolonged recovery periods and determine how recovery timing affects the estimation of outstanding insurance liabilities. The study will focus on subrogation recovery periods, general insurance loss reserves, subrogation recoveries, outstanding claims, claims payments, recovery amounts, loss liabilities, claims development, reserve adequacy, recovery delays, net claim costs, insurance claims, actuarial reserving, and loss estimation. Relevant claims and recovery data will be analysed to identify patterns in the timing of subrogation recoveries and their relationship with reserve requirements. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to evaluate the effect of recovery periods on insurance loss reserves. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical general insurance claims, subrogation recovery amounts, recovery periods, claims payment dates, outstanding claim balances, and reserve estimates will be analysed. Descriptive statistics, recovery period analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, claims development analysis, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to determine the relationship between subrogation recovery periods and general insurance loss reserves. The study is expected to reveal that subrogation recovery periods may have a significant effect on general insurance loss reserves. Longer recovery periods may increase the uncertainty surrounding recoverable amounts and delay the reduction of net claim liabilities, while shorter recovery periods may facilitate earlier recognition of recoveries and improve reserve estimation. The magnitude of the effect may depend on recovery amounts, claim severity, settlement practices, legal processes, claim types, and the efficiency of subrogation procedures. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, claims managers, underwriters, risk managers, financial managers, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving reserve estimation, monitoring subrogation recoveries, assessing outstanding claims liabilities, and strengthening claims management practices. The findings may also assist insurers in incorporating realistic recovery-period assumptions into actuarial reserving models and evaluating the financial effects of delayed recoveries. The study concludes that subrogation recovery periods are important considerations in general insurance loss reserving because delays in recovering claim payments from responsible third parties can influence the timing and uncertainty of reserve adjustments. It is therefore recommended that insurers maintain accurate recovery records, monitor subrogation cases regularly, incorporate realistic recovery-period assumptions into reserving models, and conduct sensitivity analysis to improve the accuracy and management of general insurance loss reserves.
