Effect of Salvage Recovery Values on Motor Insurance Ultimate Losses
Abstract
Salvage recovery values represent the amounts that insurers can recover from damaged or written-off motor vehicles through the sale or disposal of salvage following the settlement of insured claims. Salvage recoveries can reduce the net financial burden of motor insurance claims and therefore constitute an important consideration in estimating ultimate losses. Accurate assessment of salvage values is consequently relevant to claims management, loss estimation, reserving, and overall motor insurance risk management. This study will examine the effect of salvage recovery values on motor insurance ultimate losses. It will assess how variations in the value of recoverable vehicle salvage influence the final cost of motor insurance claims after considering claim payments and other recoveries. The study will also compare ultimate losses under different salvage recovery values and determine the extent to which salvage recoveries contribute to variations in insurers’ overall motor insurance loss experience. The study will focus on salvage recovery values, motor insurance ultimate losses, vehicle damage, written-off vehicles, salvage proceeds, claim payments, claim recoveries, loss severity, outstanding claims, ultimate losses, motor insurance claims, recovery estimation, actuarial reserving, and loss modelling. Relevant motor insurance claims and salvage recovery data will be analysed to identify patterns in salvage values and their relationship with ultimate losses. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to estimate the financial effect of salvage recoveries on motor insurance losses. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical motor insurance claims, vehicle damage assessments, salvage values, claim payments, recovery amounts, settlement information, and ultimate loss estimates will be analysed. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, loss severity analysis, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to determine the relationship between salvage recovery values and motor insurance ultimate losses. The study is expected to reveal that salvage recovery values may have a significant effect on motor insurance ultimate losses. Higher salvage recovery values may reduce the net ultimate cost of claims, while lower recovery values may result in higher net losses for insurers. The magnitude of the effect may depend on vehicle age, vehicle type, extent of damage, market value, salvage condition, repair costs, disposal methods, and prevailing market conditions. The study will be useful to actuaries, motor insurance companies, claims managers, underwriters, loss adjusters, risk managers, financial managers, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving salvage valuation, estimating ultimate claim costs, strengthening claims settlement procedures, and developing more accurate actuarial reserving models. The findings may also assist insurers in evaluating recovery assumptions and managing the financial impact of motor insurance claims. The study concludes that salvage recovery values are important considerations in estimating motor insurance ultimate losses because recoveries from damaged vehicles can reduce the net cost of settled claims. It is therefore recommended that insurers maintain accurate salvage valuation records, regularly assess prevailing salvage market values, incorporate realistic recovery assumptions into actuarial models, and monitor salvage disposal processes to improve the accuracy of ultimate loss estimation and reserve management.
