Effect of Risk Pool Expansion on Expected Insurance Loss Variability
Abstract
Risk pool expansion refers to an increase in the number or volume of insured risks included within an insurance portfolio. Insurance risk pools may expand through the acquisition of new policyholders, extension of coverage, or growth in insured exposures. As the size and composition of a risk pool change, the pattern of claims experienced by an insurer may also change, potentially influencing the variability of expected insurance losses. This study will examine the effect of risk pool expansion on expected insurance loss variability. It will assess how increases in the size of an insurance risk pool influence the variability of expected claims and aggregate losses. The study will also compare expected loss outcomes under different risk pool sizes to determine how changes in the number and volume of insured risks affect loss variability. The study will focus on risk pool expansion, expected insurance loss variability, insurance risk pools, claim frequency, claim severity, aggregate losses, exposure levels, portfolio size, claims experience, loss distributions, and actuarial risk modelling. Historical policy, exposure, and claims data will be examined to identify changes in loss patterns associated with different risk pool sizes and to evaluate the resulting variation in expected insurance losses. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance policy, exposure, claims, and loss data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, claim frequency and severity analysis, variance analysis, aggregate claims modelling, probability distribution analysis, correlation analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative risk pool expansion scenarios will also be modelled to determine their effects on expected loss variability and aggregate claims estimates. The study is expected to reveal that risk pool expansion may have a significant effect on expected insurance loss variability. An increase in the number of insured risks may change the variability of aggregate losses by increasing the volume of exposures and spreading losses across a larger pool. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the size of the risk pool, claim frequency, claim severity, exposure characteristics, portfolio composition, and the degree of dependence among insured risks. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, pricing analysts, underwriters, claims analysts, risk managers, portfolio managers, financial managers, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for evaluating risk pool growth, improving aggregate loss projections, strengthening actuarial risk assessment, and supporting insurance portfolio planning. The findings may also assist insurers in understanding the implications of expanding their risk pools for expected loss variability. The study concludes that risk pool expansion is an important consideration in the assessment of expected insurance loss variability. It is therefore recommended that insurers monitor changes in risk pool size and composition, incorporate exposure growth into actuarial loss models, and conduct appropriate variability and sensitivity analysis when evaluating the effects of risk pool expansion on aggregate insurance losses.
