Effect of Reinsurance Held Measurement on Insurance Contract Valuation
Abstract
Reinsurance held refers to reinsurance arrangements purchased by an insurer to transfer part of the risks associated with its underlying insurance contracts to a reinsurer. The measurement of reinsurance held is an important aspect of insurance contract valuation because it affects the recognition and measurement of amounts recoverable from reinsurers and the insurer’s overall assessment of risk exposure. Accurate measurement is therefore necessary for presenting a reliable valuation of insurance contracts and related financial obligations. This study examines the effect of reinsurance held measurement on insurance contract valuation. The study will assess how the measurement of reinsurance arrangements influences the valuation of underlying insurance contracts and the financial position of insurance companies. It will focus on how changes in expected reinsurance recoveries, risk adjustments, and other measurement assumptions affect the estimated values of insurance contracts. The study will consider factors such as expected reinsurance recoveries, claims experience, reinsurance premiums, risk adjustment, contract duration, loss recovery patterns, discount rates, claims frequency, claims severity, and reinsurer credit exposure. These factors will be examined to determine how variations in the measurement of reinsurance held influence insurance contract values and related liability estimates. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance contract and reinsurance data will be analysed using actuarial valuation techniques, expected cash flow models, present value calculations, ratio analysis, scenario analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative assumptions concerning claims experience, reinsurance recoveries, and risk adjustments will be applied to assess their effects on the valuation of reinsurance held and the associated insurance contracts. The study is expected to reveal that changes in the measurement of reinsurance held may significantly affect insurance contract valuation. Higher expected recoveries from reinsurers may reduce the net financial exposure associated with underlying insurance obligations, while changes in claims experience, risk adjustments, discount rates, or recoverability assumptions may produce different valuation outcomes. The findings may also show that accurate recognition of reinsurance-related cash flows is important for achieving reliable estimates of insurance contract values. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, reinsurers, accountants, financial managers, regulators, and other stakeholders involved in insurance contract valuation. It may provide useful information for improving the measurement of reinsurance arrangements, assessing recoverable amounts, strengthening liability valuation, managing reinsurance exposure, and enhancing the quality of insurance financial reporting. The study concludes that the measurement of reinsurance held is an important consideration in insurance contract valuation because reinsurance-related cash flows and risk adjustments can influence the estimated financial obligations and recoveries associated with insurance contracts. It is therefore recommended that insurers apply appropriate actuarial valuation techniques, maintain reliable reinsurance and claims data, regularly assess expected recoveries and reinsurer exposure, and review relevant measurement assumptions to improve valuation accuracy.
