Effect of Projected Unit Credit Method on Employee Benefit Valuation

Abstract

The Projected Unit Credit Method is an actuarial valuation approach used to determine the present value of defined benefit obligations by allocating benefit costs to employees’ periods of service. The method considers factors such as current and projected salaries, years of service, retirement age, and expected future benefits in estimating the financial obligation associated with employee benefit schemes. Its application is therefore important in determining the value of employee benefit liabilities and the amount recognised by organisations. This study will examine the effect of the Projected Unit Credit Method on employee benefit valuation. It will assess how the application of the method influences the estimated present value of employee benefit obligations. The study will also examine variations in employee benefit valuations under different assumptions relating to salary growth, employee service, retirement age, and benefit levels. The study will focus on the Projected Unit Credit Method, employee benefit valuation, defined benefit obligations, actuarial liabilities, pension benefits, employee service periods, projected salaries, retirement benefits, discount rates, salary growth, actuarial assumptions, and benefit costs. Relevant employee and benefit scheme data will be analysed to determine how the method allocates future benefit costs and influences the estimated value of obligations over employees’ periods of service. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data relating to employee ages, salaries, years of service, retirement ages, expected benefit amounts, discount rates, salary growth assumptions, and benefit formulas will be analysed. Actuarial present value calculations, projected unit credit valuation techniques, descriptive statistics, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to assess changes in employee benefit valuations under different actuarial assumptions. The study is expected to reveal that the Projected Unit Credit Method may have a significant effect on employee benefit valuation. The resulting liability estimates may vary according to projected salary increases, employee service periods, retirement assumptions, discount rates, and expected benefit payments. Changes in these assumptions may produce corresponding changes in the present value of defined benefit obligations and the amount of employee benefit liabilities recognised by organisations. The study will be useful to actuaries, employers, pension administrators, financial managers, auditors, human resource professionals, pension trustees, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving the measurement of employee benefit obligations, supporting financial reporting, assessing pension funding requirements, and strengthening actuarial valuation practices. The findings may also assist organisations in understanding the financial implications of projected employee benefits. The study concludes that the Projected Unit Credit Method is an important approach for measuring employee benefit obligations because it provides a structured basis for allocating future benefit costs over an employee’s service period. It is therefore recommended that organisations apply appropriate actuarial assumptions consistently and conduct regular valuations to ensure reliable measurement of employee benefit obligations and effective long-term benefit planning.
