Effect of Professional Indemnity Retention Levels on Expected Loss Costs
Abstract
Professional indemnity retention levels refer to the portion of a professional liability loss that an insured is required to bear before the insurer becomes responsible for the covered amount, subject to the terms and limits of the insurance contract. Retention levels are important components of professional indemnity insurance because they determine how losses are shared between the insured and the insurer. Changes in retention levels can therefore influence the insurer’s expected claim costs and the overall financial exposure associated with professional liability risks. This study will examine the effect of professional indemnity retention levels on expected loss costs. It will assess how variations in retention levels influence the expected losses borne by insurers under professional indemnity policies. The study will also compare expected loss costs under different retention structures and determine the extent to which changes in the insured’s retained portion affect the insurer’s expected financial obligations. The study will focus on professional indemnity retention levels, expected loss costs, professional liability insurance, retained losses, insurance claims, claim frequency, claim severity, policy limits, liability exposure, loss distributions, expected claims, premium estimation, and actuarial risk assessment. Relevant professional indemnity claims and policy data will be examined to identify relationships between retention levels and expected insurer losses. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to evaluate the financial implications of different retention structures. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data relating to professional indemnity claims, claim amounts, retention levels, policy limits, claim frequency, claim severity, settlement amounts, and insured exposures will be analysed using descriptive statistics, retention level analysis, frequency and severity analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative retention scenarios will also be evaluated to determine their effects on expected loss costs. The study is expected to reveal that professional indemnity retention levels may have a significant effect on expected loss costs. Higher retention levels may reduce the portion of individual losses borne by insurers and consequently lower expected insurer claim costs, while lower retention levels may increase the insurer’s share of covered losses. The magnitude of the effect may depend on claim frequency, claim severity, policy limits, loss distributions, retention structures, and the characteristics of the professional liability risks insured. The study will be useful to actuaries, professional indemnity insurers, underwriters, claims managers, professional firms, risk managers, insurance brokers, pricing analysts, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for evaluating retention structures, improving expected loss estimation, developing appropriate premium assumptions, assessing professional liability exposure, and strengthening actuarial pricing and risk management practices. The study concludes that professional indemnity retention levels are important considerations in estimating expected loss costs because they determine the portion of covered losses that remains with the insured and the portion transferred to the insurer. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly evaluate retention structures, analyse historical claims experience, incorporate appropriate retention assumptions into actuarial models, and conduct sensitivity analysis to support reliable estimation of expected professional indemnity losses.
