Effect of Prescription Costs on Health Insurance Claims Expenditure

Abstract

The study examines the effect of prescription costs on health insurance claims expenditure, focusing on how the cost of prescribed medicines influences the financial obligations of health insurance providers. Prescription medicines constitute an important component of healthcare expenditure, particularly where insured individuals require regular medication or expensive treatments. Changes in drug prices, prescription frequency, and the type of medicines prescribed can therefore have a direct effect on the amount insurers spend on settling health insurance claims. The study will investigate the effect of prescription costs on health insurance claims expenditure by examining the relationship between the cost of prescribed medicines and total claims payments. It will consider variations in prescription costs across different categories of medication and assess how these costs contribute to overall healthcare claims expenditure. The study will also examine whether increases in prescription costs are associated with corresponding increases in insurers' claims obligations. Furthermore, the study will assess factors that may contribute to variations in prescription-related claims expenditure, including medicine prices, prescription frequency, quantity of medicines supplied, generic and branded medication use, and the duration of treatment. Higher prescription costs or frequent medication use may increase the financial burden placed on health insurers. Descriptive statistics will be used to analyze patterns in prescription costs and claims expenditure, while inferential techniques such as correlation analysis, regression analysis, and other appropriate actuarial and statistical methods may be employed to determine the effect of prescription costs on health insurance claims expenditure. The study is expected to reveal that prescription costs have a significant effect on health insurance claims expenditure. It may show that increases in the prices of prescribed medicines and higher prescription utilization contribute to greater claims expenditure. The findings may also indicate that expensive medications and prolonged treatment periods account for a substantial proportion of prescription-related insurance costs. The findings are expected to provide useful information for health insurers in improving claims cost management and actuarial assessment. Understanding prescription cost patterns may assist insurers in forecasting pharmaceutical expenditure, monitoring claims, assessing premium adequacy, and developing appropriate cost-management strategies. The findings may also support more effective negotiations with healthcare providers and pharmaceutical suppliers while ensuring that policyholders continue to receive necessary medical treatment. The study concludes that prescription costs are an important determinant of health insurance claims expenditure because variations in medication prices and utilization can significantly influence insurers' financial obligations. It is therefore recommended that health insurance companies should regularly monitor prescription costs and incorporate reliable pharmaceutical expenditure data into claims forecasting and actuarial models. Insurers should also strengthen prescription monitoring and cost-control practices to improve the sustainability of health insurance claims management.
