Effect of Policy Count Changes on Aggregate Insurance Loss Projections

Abstract

Policy count refers to the number of active insurance policies within an insurer’s portfolio during a specified period. Changes in policy count may occur as a result of new policy sales, renewals, cancellations, lapses, or policy expirations. Since the number of policies represents an important measure of insurance exposure, changes in policy count may influence the expected number of claims and the overall level of aggregate insurance losses. This study will examine the effect of policy count changes on aggregate insurance loss projections. It will assess how increases and decreases in the number of active policies influence projected aggregate claims and expected insurance losses. The study will also compare aggregate loss projections under different policy count scenarios to determine the extent to which changes in portfolio size affect actuarial loss estimates. The study will focus on policy count changes, aggregate insurance loss projections, insurance exposure, claim frequency, claim severity, aggregate claims, expected losses, policy growth, policy cancellations, policy renewals, and actuarial loss modelling. Historical policy and claims data will be examined to identify relationships between changes in policy volumes and the resulting patterns of aggregate insurance losses. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical policy count, exposure, claims, and loss data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, policy growth analysis, claim frequency and severity analysis, loss ratio analysis, aggregate claims modelling, regression analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative policy count scenarios will also be modelled to determine their effects on projected aggregate losses. The study is expected to reveal that policy count changes may have a significant effect on aggregate insurance loss projections. Increases in the number of active policies may lead to higher projected aggregate losses as the volume of insured exposure increases, while reductions in policy count may produce different aggregate loss estimates. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the rate of policy growth or decline, claim frequency, claim severity, policy characteristics, exposure levels, and historical claims experience. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, pricing analysts, underwriters, claims analysts, risk managers, financial managers, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving aggregate loss projections, exposure management, premium planning, claims forecasting, and actuarial risk assessment. The findings may also assist insurers in understanding how changes in portfolio size affect expected aggregate losses and future financial requirements. The study concludes that policy count changes are important considerations in aggregate insurance loss projection because variations in the number of active policies can influence the volume of expected claims and losses. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly monitor policy count trends, incorporate changes in policy exposure into actuarial loss models, and conduct sensitivity analysis to improve the reliability of aggregate loss projections.
