Effect of Policy Benefit Limits on Insurance Premium Levels

Abstract

Policy benefit limits specify the maximum amount an insurer is obligated to pay for covered losses or benefits under an insurance policy. The level of benefits provided can influence the insurer’s potential financial exposure, expected claims costs, and the premium charged to policyholders. Understanding the relationship between benefit limits and premium levels is therefore important for appropriate insurance pricing, risk assessment, and the design of sustainable insurance products. The study examines the effect of policy benefit limits on insurance premium levels. It will assess how variations in the maximum benefits available under insurance policies influence the premiums charged to policyholders. The study will also examine whether policies with higher benefit limits attract higher premiums and assess the extent to which changes in coverage limits contribute to differences in premium levels. The study will consider factors such as policy benefit limits, coverage levels, premium amounts, claim frequency, claim severity, policy type, policy duration, and historical claims experience. Statistical and actuarial techniques including descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and comparative analysis will be applied to examine the relationship between benefit limits and premium levels. These techniques will help determine the extent to which variations in coverage limits influence insurance pricing. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Policies with higher benefit limits are expected to attract higher premiums because they expose insurers to potentially greater financial obligations when covered losses occur. Conversely, policies with lower benefit limits may attract relatively lower premiums due to their lower potential claims exposure. The findings may also show that the strength of this relationship differs across insurance product categories. The findings are expected to be useful to insurance companies, actuaries, underwriters, pricing analysts, and policyholders. Understanding the relationship between benefit limits and premiums may assist insurers in developing appropriate pricing structures, estimating potential claims exposure, and designing products that balance coverage and affordability. It may also help policyholders make informed decisions when selecting benefit levels based on their insurance needs and financial capacity. The study concludes that policy benefit limits are an important factor in determining insurance premium levels and should be appropriately incorporated into premium rating decisions. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly analyse claims experience and benefit structures when reviewing premium rates. Appropriate alignment between benefit limits and premiums may improve pricing accuracy, maintain premium adequacy, support effective risk management, and promote sustainable insurance operations.
