Abstract

The study examines the effect of medical treatment costs on health insurance premiums, focusing on how the cost of healthcare services influences the determination of premiums charged to policyholders. Medical treatment costs constitute a major component of health insurance expenditure because insurers are required to finance covered healthcare services and settle eligible claims. Changes in the costs of consultations, medications, diagnostic procedures, surgeries, hospitalization, and other medical treatments can therefore affect insurers' financial obligations and the adequacy of health insurance premiums. The study will investigate the effect of medical treatment costs on health insurance premiums by examining the relationship between healthcare expenditure and the amount charged for health insurance coverage. It will assess how variations in treatment costs influence insurers' claims expenditure and expected future healthcare liabilities. The study will also determine whether increases in medical treatment costs are associated with corresponding changes in health insurance premium levels. Furthermore, the study will examine the contribution of different categories of medical treatment costs to health insurance pricing. The findings may also support improved negotiation of healthcare service costs and more effective management of health insurance portfolios. The study concludes that medical treatment costs are an important determinant of health insurance premiums because variations in healthcare expenditure directly influence insurers' claims obligations and expected costs. It is therefore recommended that health insurance companies should continuously monitor medical treatment costs and incorporate reliable healthcare expenditure data into actuarial pricing models. Insurers should also strengthen claims analysis, cost monitoring, and healthcare provider management to ensure that health insurance premiums remain adequate, competitive, and financially sustainable.
