Effect of Long-Term Care Claim Frequencies on Premium Determination
Abstract
Long-term care insurance provides financial protection against expenses arising from extended care services required by individuals who experience prolonged limitations in their ability to perform daily activities. The frequency of claims under such insurance contracts is an important actuarial consideration because repeated or increasing claims can raise the expected cost of providing coverage. Accurate assessment of claim frequency is therefore necessary for determining sustainable and appropriate premium levels. This study will examine the effect of long-term care claim frequencies on premium determination. It will assess the extent to which variations in the frequency of long-term care claims influence the premiums required to cover expected future insurance costs. The study will also examine how historical claim frequency patterns can be incorporated into actuarial pricing models for long-term care insurance. The study will focus on long-term care claim frequency, policy exposure, benefit amounts, claim incidence, policy duration, mortality assumptions, and premium values. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to analyse the occurrence of long-term care claims and estimate their expected frequency. The analysis will examine how changes in claim frequency affect expected claim costs and the corresponding premium requirements. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant long-term care insurance policy and claims data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, Poisson or negative binomial models, and appropriate actuarial pricing techniques. Claim frequencies may be examined across different exposure periods and policy groups to estimate expected claims. The resulting estimates will be used to determine corresponding premium values under alternative claim frequency scenarios. The study is expected to reveal that variations in long-term care claim frequencies may have a significant effect on premium determination. Higher claim frequencies are expected to increase the anticipated cost of benefits and consequently raise the premium required to maintain adequate coverage. The findings may also indicate that accurate modelling of claim frequency can improve the consistency of premium estimates and reduce uncertainty in long-term care insurance pricing. The study will be useful to actuaries, long-term care insurers, underwriters, regulators, policymakers, and researchers. It may assist insurers in developing more reliable premium calculation methods and assessing the financial implications of changes in long-term care claim experience. The findings may also support improved pricing, reserving, risk assessment, and long-term financial planning for long-term care insurance products. The study concludes that long-term care claim frequency is an important factor in premium determination because changes in claim occurrence can influence expected insurance costs. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly analyse historical claim frequency experience and apply appropriate actuarial frequency models when determining premiums for long-term care insurance products.
