Effect of Insurance Policy Conversion Rates on Life Insurance Portfolio Composition

Abstract

The study examines the effect of insurance policy conversion rates on life insurance portfolio composition, focusing on how the conversion of existing insurance policies from one policy type or coverage arrangement to another influences the structure and distribution of life insurance portfolios. Policy conversion provides policyholders with an opportunity to modify their existing coverage in response to changing financial circumstances, protection needs, or policy preferences. Changes in conversion patterns can therefore affect the mix of products, premium income, policy durations, and risk characteristics within a life insurance portfolio. The study will investigate the relationship between insurance policy conversion rates and changes in life insurance portfolio composition. It will examine how the frequency of policy conversions affects the proportion of different life insurance products within an insurer's portfolio. Particular attention will be given to changes in policy types, benefit structures, premium levels, policy durations, and the distribution of risks following policy conversions. The study will focus on factors such as policy conversion rates, product categories, policy duration, premium amounts, policyholder age, benefit levels, and conversion frequency. Higher conversion rates may increase the proportion of certain insurance products while reducing the representation of others, depending on the types of policies to which policyholders convert. These changes may also influence the distribution of premium income, policy durations, benefit obligations, and overall portfolio risk. The findings are expected to be useful to life insurance companies, actuaries, insurance managers, policymakers, and policyholders. The study may assist insurers in monitoring changes in product distribution and developing appropriate strategies for managing portfolio composition. It may also provide actuarial information for assessing changes in risk exposure, projecting premium income, evaluating policy liabilities, and supporting product management decisions. The study concludes that insurance policy conversion rates can influence the composition and risk characteristics of life insurance portfolios. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly monitor policy conversion patterns and assess their effects on product distribution, premium income, and policy liabilities. Actuaries should also incorporate conversion experience into portfolio analysis and projection models to improve risk assessment, financial planning, and the management of changing life insurance portfolio structures.
