Effect of Insurance Distribution Costs on Premium Affordability

Abstract

Insurance distribution costs refer to the expenses incurred by insurance companies in making insurance products available to customers through channels such as agents, brokers, bancassurance arrangements, digital platforms, and direct sales. These costs may include commissions, marketing expenses, distribution fees, administrative expenses, and other costs associated with delivering insurance products to policyholders. The level of distribution costs may therefore have implications for the pricing and affordability of insurance premiums. This study will examine the effect of insurance distribution costs on premium affordability. It will assess how variations in the costs associated with distributing insurance products influence the premiums paid by policyholders. The study will also examine the relationship between distribution expenses and premium levels and determine the extent to which distribution costs contribute to the overall financial burden of insurance coverage. The study will focus on insurance distribution costs, premium affordability, distribution expenses, insurance commissions, marketing costs, agent costs, broker expenses, digital distribution costs, premium levels, insurance pricing, and policyholder affordability. Relevant insurance distribution and premium data will be examined to identify patterns in distribution expenditure and premium levels. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be used to assess the relationship between distribution costs and premium affordability. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Alternative distribution cost scenarios will also be examined to determine their potential effects on premium levels and affordability. The study is expected to reveal that insurance distribution costs may have a significant effect on premium affordability. Higher distribution expenses may contribute to increased premium requirements, potentially placing greater financial pressure on policyholders, while more efficient distribution structures may reduce the cost component incorporated into premiums. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the distribution channel, commission arrangements, product characteristics, operating expenses, premium volume, and the efficiency of insurance distribution systems. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, pricing analysts, insurance agents, brokers, marketing managers, financial managers, regulators, and researchers. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly monitor distribution expenses, evaluate the efficiency of different distribution channels, and incorporate appropriate distribution cost assumptions into premium pricing and affordability assessments.
