Effect of Insurance Benefit Structure on Premium Calculation

Abstract

The study examines the effect of insurance benefit structure on premium calculation, focusing on how the nature, amount, and conditions of benefits provided under an insurance policy influence the determination of premiums. Insurance premiums are calculated to reflect the expected cost of future claims and other expenses associated with providing coverage. The structure of policy benefits is therefore an important consideration in actuarial pricing because differences in benefit amounts and payment conditions can result in variations in the financial obligations of insurers. The study will investigate the extent to which insurance benefit structures influence premium calculation among selected insurance products. It will examine benefit amounts, benefit payment periods, coverage limits, benefit types, policy duration, and the conditions under which benefits become payable. The study will also assess how changes in these benefit characteristics affect the actuarial estimation of premiums required to provide sustainable insurance coverage. Specific attention will be given to death benefits, maturity benefits, disability benefits, survival benefits, benefit limits, payment frequency, mortality assumptions, claim probabilities, and administrative expenses. Actuarial pricing techniques will be applied to estimate premiums under different benefit structures. The study will also compare premium requirements across alternative benefit arrangements to determine the financial implications of changes in the structure of insurance benefits. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance product and actuarial data will be obtained from selected insurance companies, policy documents, mortality tables, and other appropriate secondary sources. Descriptive statistics, comparative analysis, probability calculations, and actuarial premium valuation techniques will be employed to examine the relationship between benefit structures and premium calculations. Sensitivity analysis may also be applied to assess how changes in benefit parameters influence calculated premiums. The study is expected to reveal that insurance benefit structure has a significant influence on premium calculation. Policies providing higher benefit amounts, broader coverage, longer benefit periods, or additional payment conditions may be expected to require higher premiums because of their potential to create greater financial obligations for insurers. The findings may also indicate that appropriate adjustment of benefit structures can influence premium affordability while maintaining sufficient funds to meet expected claims. The study is expected to be useful to insurance companies, actuaries, underwriters, policy designers, and other stakeholders involved in insurance pricing and product development. The findings may assist insurers in designing benefit structures that are appropriately aligned with expected claims costs and premium levels. The study may also provide useful information for improving actuarial pricing models and ensuring that premiums adequately reflect the financial obligations created by different insurance benefits. The study concludes that insurance benefit structure is an important determinant of premium calculation because the nature and extent of benefits influence expected claims and the financial liabilities of insurers. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies should carefully evaluate benefit amounts, coverage limits, payment conditions, and policy durations when calculating premiums to ensure adequate pricing, financial sustainability, and effective management of insurance liabilities.
