Effect of Hospital Service Volumes on Medical Malpractice Insurance Exposure

Abstract

Hospital service volumes refer to the quantity of medical services, procedures, treatments, consultations, and other healthcare activities provided by a hospital over a specified period. Higher service volumes may increase the number of interactions between healthcare providers and patients and consequently influence the frequency of situations that could give rise to medical malpractice claims. Hospital service volumes are therefore relevant to the assessment of medical malpractice insurance exposure and the estimation of potential insurance losses. This study will examine the effect of hospital service volumes on medical malpractice insurance exposure. It will assess how variations in the volume of healthcare services provided by hospitals influence their exposure to medical malpractice insurance risks. The study will also examine differences in malpractice claims and potential liabilities associated with varying levels of hospital service activity and determine the relationship between service volumes and insurance exposure. The study will focus on hospital service volumes, medical malpractice insurance exposure, medical malpractice claims, healthcare services, patient encounters, medical procedures, treatment volumes, claim frequency, claim severity, professional liability, hospital risk exposure, insurance losses, and actuarial analysis. Relevant hospital service and insurance claims data will be examined to identify patterns in service volumes and their relationship with malpractice insurance exposure. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to evaluate the financial implications of varying hospital service volumes. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data relating to patient visits, medical procedures, hospital admissions, treatment volumes, malpractice claims, claim frequency, claim severity, settlement amounts, and insurance exposure will be analysed using descriptive statistics, service volume analysis, claims frequency and severity analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Different hospital service volume scenarios will also be evaluated to determine their effects on medical malpractice insurance exposure. The study is expected to reveal that hospital service volumes may have a significant effect on medical malpractice insurance exposure. Higher service volumes may increase the number of opportunities for adverse events and malpractice claims, potentially resulting in greater insurance exposure, while lower service volumes may be associated with fewer potential claim events. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the type of medical services provided, procedure complexity, patient volume, healthcare provider practices, claim frequency, claim severity, and the quality of risk management within hospitals. The study will be useful to actuaries, medical malpractice insurers, hospital administrators, healthcare providers, underwriters, claims managers, risk managers, insurance regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for assessing professional liability exposure, improving malpractice insurance pricing, estimating expected claims, developing appropriate underwriting assumptions, and strengthening risk management practices in healthcare institutions. The study concludes that hospital service volumes are important considerations in assessing medical malpractice insurance exposure because the quantity and nature of healthcare activities can influence the potential frequency and financial magnitude of malpractice claims. It is therefore recommended that insurers and hospitals maintain accurate service volume records, incorporate relevant service activity measures into actuarial risk assessment, regularly monitor claims experience, and use appropriate exposure assumptions in medical malpractice insurance pricing and liability estimation.
