Abstract

The study examines the effect of healthcare provider charges on health insurance pricing, with emphasis on how the costs imposed by healthcare providers influence the determination of health insurance premiums. Healthcare provider charges represent a major component of healthcare expenditure because insurers are responsible for covering various medical services provided to policyholders. Changes in consultation fees, diagnostic charges, treatment costs, hospital charges, and other healthcare service costs can therefore affect the financial obligations of health insurers. Understanding this relationship is important for developing adequate and sustainable health insurance pricing practices. The study will investigate the effect of healthcare provider charges on health insurance pricing by examining the relationship between provider charges and the premiums required to provide health insurance coverage. It will assess whether variations in healthcare service charges contribute to differences in insurance claims expenditure and expected healthcare costs. The study will also examine how changes in provider charges may influence the ability of insurers to determine premiums that adequately reflect the expected cost of healthcare services. Furthermore, the study will consider the effect of provider charges on key components of health insurance pricing, including expected claims costs, loss ratios, medical expenditure, and premium adequacy. It is therefore recommended that health insurance companies should regularly monitor provider charges and incorporate reliable healthcare cost data into their pricing models. Insurers should also strengthen provider negotiations, claims monitoring, and actuarial analysis to promote accurate, adequate, and sustainable health insurance premiums.
