Effect of Equity Market Returns on Unit-Linked Insurance Fund Values

Abstract

Equity market returns represent the gains or losses generated from investments in shares and other equity securities over a specified period. Unit-linked insurance products connect policy benefits and fund values to the performance of underlying investment funds, making their values sensitive to movements in financial markets. Changes in equity market returns can therefore influence the accumulation of policyholder funds and the overall value of unit-linked insurance investments. The study examines the effect of equity market returns on unit-linked insurance fund values. It will assess how changes in equity market performance influence the value of funds underlying unit-linked insurance policies. The study will also consider the relationship between equity returns, investment fund performance, policyholder account values, premium contributions, and the resulting changes in unit-linked fund values. The study will focus on equity market returns, share price movements, investment fund performance, premium contributions, policyholder account values, fund allocation, and investment periods. Investment valuation and return analysis techniques will be applied to assess changes in unit-linked fund values under different equity market conditions. The study will further examine the extent to which fluctuations in equity returns contribute to changes in policyholder investment values. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance and financial data, including historical equity market returns, unit-linked fund values, premium contributions, investment allocations, and policyholder account values, will be considered. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, return analysis, and investment valuation techniques will be used to examine the effect of equity market returns on unit-linked insurance fund values. The study is expected to show that equity market returns have a measurable effect on unit-linked insurance fund values. Positive equity market returns may increase the market value of underlying investments and consequently raise policyholder fund values, while negative returns may reduce the value of accumulated funds. The magnitude of these changes may depend on the level of equity exposure, investment duration, fund composition, and premium contributions. The study is expected to provide useful information for insurance companies, actuaries, investment managers, financial analysts, and policyholders. The findings may support investment fund management, asset allocation, product valuation, policyholder communication, and assessment of market-related investment risks. The study may also assist insurers in understanding the potential effects of equity market fluctuations on unit-linked insurance products. The study concludes that equity market performance is an important factor in determining the values of unit-linked insurance funds. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly monitor equity market conditions and investment fund performance while maintaining appropriate investment management and risk assessment practices to manage fluctuations in unit-linked fund values.
