Effect of Employee Mortality Assumptions on Post-Employment Benefit Valuation

Abstract

Employee mortality assumptions refer to actuarial estimates of the probability of death among employees at different ages and stages of their working and post-employment lives. These assumptions are important in valuing post-employment benefits because the timing and duration of benefit payments may depend on the survival or death of eligible employees and beneficiaries. Changes in mortality assumptions can therefore influence the estimated present value of future post-employment benefit obligations. This study will examine the effect of employee mortality assumptions on post-employment benefit valuation. It will assess how variations in mortality assumptions influence the actuarial valuation of benefits payable to employees after employment. The study will also compare post-employment benefit values under alternative mortality assumptions and determine the extent to which changes in expected mortality experience affect estimated benefit obligations. The study will focus on employee mortality assumptions, post-employment benefits, benefit valuation, actuarial assumptions, employee survival probabilities, mortality rates, pension obligations, retirement benefits, benefit liabilities, actuarial present values, employee demographics, and actuarial valuation. Relevant employee demographic and benefit data will be examined to identify mortality patterns and their implications for future benefit payments. Actuarial techniques will be applied to estimate post-employment benefit values under alternative mortality assumptions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Employee demographic data, age distributions, retirement ages, accrued benefits, mortality rates, salary information, benefit payment schedules, and relevant discount rate assumptions will be analysed using descriptive statistics, mortality analysis, survival probability estimation, actuarial present value calculations, post-employment benefit valuation, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative mortality assumptions will be applied to projected benefit cash flows to determine their effects on estimated post-employment benefit obligations. The study is expected to reveal that employee mortality assumptions may have a significant effect on post-employment benefit valuation. Mortality assumptions indicating longer employee survival may increase the expected duration of benefit payments and potentially result in higher benefit obligations, while assumptions indicating shorter survival may produce different liability estimates. The magnitude of the effect may depend on employee age distribution, benefit structure, retirement age, mortality rates, discount rates, salary projections, and the duration of benefit payments. The study will be useful to actuaries, employers, pension scheme administrators, financial managers, human resource professionals, regulators, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving post-employment benefit valuation, evaluating pension liabilities, selecting appropriate mortality assumptions, and strengthening actuarial reporting. The findings may also assist organizations in understanding how changes in employee mortality expectations can affect their long-term benefit obligations. The study concludes that employee mortality assumptions are important considerations in post-employment benefit valuation because expected survival patterns influence the timing and duration of future benefit payments. It is therefore recommended that organizations and actuaries regularly review mortality assumptions, use relevant demographic experience, and conduct sensitivity analysis to assess the effect of alternative mortality assumptions on post-employment benefit obligations.
