Effect of Driver Mileage Bands on Usage-Based Insurance Premiums

Abstract

Driver mileage is an important factor in usage-based motor insurance because the distance driven by a policyholder can influence exposure to road-related risks and the likelihood of experiencing an insured event. Mileage bands provide a structured method of grouping drivers according to the distance they travel within a specified period. Differences in mileage bands may therefore affect the assessment of risk and the premiums charged under usage-based insurance arrangements. This study examines the effect of driver mileage bands on usage-based insurance premiums. The study will investigate how different annual or periodic mileage ranges influence premium determination for usage-based motor insurance policies. Particular attention will be given to mileage levels, driving exposure, claim frequency, claim severity, and the resulting premium differences across mileage bands. The study will consider factors such as annual mileage, mileage bands, claim frequency, claim severity, driving exposure, vehicle usage, policy duration, and premium rates. Actuarial pricing techniques will be applied to estimate expected losses associated with different mileage categories and determine corresponding premium requirements. Comparative analysis will also be used to examine premium variations across low-, medium-, and high-mileage bands. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant motor insurance claims, mileage, and premium data, together with hypothetical usage-based insurance scenarios, will be analysed using actuarial pricing models, frequency and severity analysis, exposure measures, and statistical techniques. Sensitivity analysis will be conducted to examine how changes in mileage bands affect expected claims costs and usage-based insurance premiums. The study is expected to reveal that higher mileage bands may be associated with greater exposure to driving risks and consequently higher expected claims costs and premium requirements. Lower mileage bands may correspond with lower expected exposure and potentially lower premiums. The magnitude of the effect is expected to depend on the relationship between mileage and claims experience, as well as the structure of the mileage classification system. The findings of the study may provide useful information to actuaries, motor insurance companies, underwriters, telematics providers, policyholders, and regulators. Understanding the effect of mileage bands can support more accurate usage-based pricing, improved risk classification, appropriate premium differentiation, and effective management of motor insurance portfolios. The study may also assist insurers in developing mileage categories that are consistent with observed claims experience. The study concludes that driver mileage bands can influence usage-based insurance premiums because mileage provides a measure of driving exposure that can be incorporated into actuarial risk assessment and premium determination. It is therefore recommended that insurers analyse mileage and claims data regularly, establish appropriate mileage classifications, incorporate exposure differences into pricing models, and review mileage-based premiums as driving and claims patterns change.
