Effect of Critical Illness Claim Durations on Expected Insurance Liabilities

Abstract

Critical illness insurance provides financial protection to policyholders who meet specified conditions following the diagnosis of covered serious illnesses. The duration of a critical illness claim can influence the timing and amount of benefit payments and associated insurance expenses. Understanding claim duration is therefore important for estimating the expected liabilities that insurers may incur over the life of critical illness insurance contracts. This study will examine the effect of critical illness claim durations on expected insurance liabilities. It will assess the extent to which variations in the duration of claims influence the expected financial obligations of insurance companies. The study will also examine how differences in claim duration affect the timing of benefit payments and the actuarial valuation of future insurance liabilities. The study will focus on critical illness claim duration, benefit amounts, claim payment patterns, survival periods, interest rate assumptions, and expected insurance liabilities. Actuarial techniques will be applied to evaluate how different claim-duration periods influence the present value of expected future payments and related liabilities. The analysis will consider variations in claim duration and their corresponding effects on the financial obligations associated with critical illness insurance policies. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant critical illness insurance claims data, policy information, payment records, and actuarial assumptions will be analysed using descriptive statistics, survival analysis, actuarial present value techniques, and scenario analysis. Claims may be grouped according to duration categories, and their associated expected liabilities will be estimated and compared. The analysis will provide empirical evidence on the relationship between claim duration and expected insurance liabilities. The study is expected to reveal that variations in critical illness claim durations may produce differences in expected insurance liabilities. Longer claim durations may result in greater or more prolonged financial obligations where benefits are linked to continuing periods of eligibility or income protection. The findings may also indicate that the effect of claim duration on liabilities depends on benefit structures, payment schedules, mortality or survival assumptions, and applicable interest rates. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, underwriters, claims managers, regulators, and researchers. It may assist insurers in improving the estimation and management of critical illness insurance liabilities and developing appropriate reserving procedures. The findings may also support more accurate actuarial modelling of claim duration and enhance financial planning for insurance products involving prolonged benefit payments. The study concludes that critical illness claim duration can influence expected insurance liabilities by affecting the timing and potential duration of benefit payments. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate reliable claim-duration information and appropriate actuarial models into liability estimation to improve the accuracy and adequacy of reserves for critical illness insurance contracts.
