Effect of Construction Project Complexity on Insurance Claim Frequency

Abstract

Construction projects involve varying levels of technical, operational, financial, and structural complexity, which can influence the exposure of contractors and insurers to different forms of risk. Complex projects may involve specialized designs, multiple contractors, advanced equipment, challenging construction processes, and longer project durations. These characteristics can increase the number of risk events experienced during construction and may consequently influence the frequency of insurance claims. The study examines the effect of construction project complexity on insurance claim frequency. It will assess how differences in project complexity influence the occurrence of insured losses and examine the relationship between project characteristics, construction activities, risk exposure, and the frequency of insurance claims. The study will also consider how variations in project scope, technical requirements, and construction processes contribute to differences in claim experience. The study will focus on construction project complexity, insurance claim frequency, construction insurance, project characteristics, technical complexity, construction activities, risk exposure, insured losses, contractor risks, claim occurrence, and construction claims. Historical construction insurance and project records containing project characteristics, construction activities, reported incidents, and insurance claims will be examined using relevant actuarial and statistical techniques. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be obtained from construction insurance claims records and relevant project information, including project type, project size, construction duration, technical specifications, number of construction activities, reported incidents, and claim records. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, frequency analysis, and actuarial risk assessment techniques will be employed to evaluate the relationship between project complexity and insurance claim frequency. The study is expected to reveal that higher levels of construction project complexity may be associated with increased insurance claim frequency. Projects involving more complicated designs, specialized construction activities, multiple contractors, and demanding technical requirements may create greater opportunities for insured incidents to occur. Variations in project duration, construction methods, site conditions, and operational activities are also expected to contribute to differences in claim frequency. The findings may provide useful information to actuaries, construction insurers, underwriters, contractors, project managers, and risk management professionals. The results may support improved construction risk classification, premium determination, underwriting decisions, claims forecasting, and loss prevention strategies. The study may also assist insurers in incorporating project complexity characteristics into actuarial models used to estimate construction insurance claim frequency. The study concludes that construction project complexity is an important factor in understanding construction insurance claim frequency. It is therefore recommended that insurers assess project complexity during underwriting and incorporate relevant project characteristics into actuarial risk assessment and pricing models. Proper evaluation of construction complexity may improve claim frequency estimation and contribute to more effective management of construction insurance risks.
