Effect of Competing Decrement Assumptions on Employee Benefit Values
Abstract
Competing decrement assumptions are actuarial assumptions used to account for different events that may cause an employee to leave active service or influence eligibility for future employee benefits. Such events may include retirement, withdrawal, disability, and death, each of which can affect the expected duration of an employee’s service and the timing of benefit payments. The accurate assessment of these assumptions is therefore important in determining the value of employee benefit obligations. This study will examine the effect of competing decrement assumptions on employee benefit values. It will assess how variations in assumptions relating to employee withdrawal, retirement, disability, and mortality influence the estimated value of future employee benefits. The study will also compare employee benefit values under alternative combinations of decrement assumptions and determine how changes in individual decrement rates affect projected benefit obligations. The study will focus on competing decrement assumptions, employee benefit values, multiple decrement models, actuarial valuation, withdrawal rates, retirement rates, disability rates, mortality rates, employee service periods, benefit eligibility, pension benefits, gratuity benefits, and actuarial liabilities. Relevant employee and benefit scheme data will be analysed to determine how competing employee exit events affect the probability of remaining in service and the expected value of future benefits. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data relating to employee ages, salaries, entry ages, service periods, retirement ages, withdrawal experience, disability rates, mortality rates, benefit formulas, discount rates, and expected benefit payments will be analysed. Multiple decrement actuarial models, present value calculations, descriptive statistics, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to evaluate employee benefit values under different decrement assumptions. The study is expected to reveal that competing decrement assumptions may have a significant effect on employee benefit values. Changes in withdrawal, retirement, disability, and mortality assumptions may alter the probability and timing of benefit eligibility, resulting in differences in projected employee benefit values and actuarial liabilities. The magnitude of these differences may depend on employee age distribution, service duration, salary progression, benefit structures, and the interaction among the different decrement rates. The study will be useful to actuaries, employers, pension administrators, human resource professionals, financial managers, auditors, employee benefit administrators, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving employee benefit valuation, assessing actuarial liabilities, supporting financial reporting, and strengthening long-term employee benefit planning. The findings may also assist organisations in understanding the financial implications of alternative competing decrement assumptions. The study concludes that competing decrement assumptions are important considerations in employee benefit valuation because multiple employee exit events can influence the probability and timing of future benefit payments. It is therefore recommended that organisations regularly review employee experience data and apply appropriate multiple decrement assumptions consistently in actuarial valuations to support reliable benefit estimates and effective long-term liability management.
