Effect of Catastrophe Risk Exposure on Insurance Financial Resilience
Abstract
Catastrophe risks such as floods, storms, earthquakes, wildfires, and other severe natural or human-induced events can generate large and unexpected insurance claims. High exposure to catastrophic events can place considerable pressure on insurers’ capital, reserves, liquidity, and solvency positions. Understanding the effect of catastrophe risk exposure on insurance financial resilience is therefore important for assessing the ability of insurers to withstand severe loss events and continue their operations. The study examines the effect of catastrophe risk exposure on insurance financial resilience. It focuses on how the level of exposure to catastrophic risks may influence insurers’ ability to absorb substantial losses and maintain adequate financial resources. The study will assess the relationship between catastrophe exposure, claims experience, capital adequacy, reserve levels, solvency, and overall financial resilience. The study will consider indicators such as catastrophe risk exposure, catastrophe claims frequency, claims severity, aggregate losses, loss ratios, technical reserves, available capital, required capital, and solvency ratios. Actuarial catastrophe modelling, probability-based loss estimation, scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, and stress testing will be applied to assess the potential financial impact of severe catastrophe events. The study will also evaluate insurers’ capacity to absorb losses under different catastrophe risk conditions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance data relating to catastrophe exposure, premiums, claims, reserves, liabilities, and capital positions will be collected from selected insurance companies and analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, actuarial modelling, and stress-testing techniques. The relationship between catastrophe risk exposure and financial resilience indicators will be examined to determine the extent to which catastrophe risks affect insurers’ financial positions. The study is expected to reveal that higher catastrophe risk exposure may reduce insurance financial resilience by increasing the likelihood and magnitude of unexpected claims. Insurers with substantial exposure to catastrophic risks are expected to require stronger reserves and capital buffers to maintain adequate solvency following severe loss events. The analysis may also show that effective risk transfer and appropriate capital management can improve insurers’ capacity to withstand catastrophe-related financial shocks. The findings are expected to provide useful information for insurance companies, actuaries, regulators, and risk managers in improving catastrophe risk management and financial resilience. The study may support better risk assessment, catastrophe modelling, reserve adequacy, capital planning, reinsurance decisions, and solvency monitoring. It may also help insurers identify areas of high catastrophe exposure and develop appropriate strategies for limiting potential financial losses. The study concludes that catastrophe risk exposure can have significant implications for the financial resilience and stability of insurance companies. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly assess catastrophe exposures using actuarial models and stress-testing techniques while maintaining adequate reserves, capital buffers, and risk transfer arrangements to withstand severe catastrophe losses.
