Effect of Capital Stress Levels on Insurance Risk-Bearing Capacity
Abstract
The study examines the effect of capital stress levels on insurance risk-bearing capacity, focusing on how financial pressure on the capital position of insurance companies influences their ability to assume and absorb insurance risks. Capital stress may arise from adverse claims experience, investment losses, rapid growth in liabilities, underwriting deterioration, and other unexpected financial pressures. Understanding the effect of capital stress on risk-bearing capacity is therefore important for assessing the resilience and solvency of insurance companies. The study will investigate the effect of capital stress levels on the risk-bearing capacity of insurance companies. It will examine available capital, required capital, capital adequacy ratios, insurance liabilities, claims obligations, underwriting exposure, and investment risk. The study will assess how different levels of capital stress influence the amount of risk insurers can safely undertake and retain within their portfolios. Specific attention will be given to changes in claims experience, capital adequacy, liability growth, underwriting losses, investment performance, and solvency margins. Actuarial risk measures and financial indicators will be applied to evaluate insurers’ risk-bearing capacity under varying levels of capital stress. The study will also examine whether increasing capital stress leads to reductions in underwriting capacity, risk retention, or portfolio exposure. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Secondary data will be obtained from insurance companies, annual financial statements, regulatory publications, and relevant industry reports. Descriptive statistics, ratio analysis, trend analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and appropriate actuarial stress-testing techniques will be employed to evaluate the relationship between capital stress levels and insurance risk-bearing capacity. The study is expected to reveal that increasing capital stress may reduce the risk-bearing capacity of insurance companies. Insurers experiencing significant reductions in available capital relative to their obligations may have less capacity to absorb unexpected losses and assume additional risks. Conversely, stronger capital positions and lower levels of capital stress are expected to provide greater flexibility for underwriting and risk retention. The findings are expected to provide useful information to insurance companies, actuaries, regulators, investors, and other stakeholders. The study may assist insurers in identifying capital stress conditions early, strengthening capital planning, and aligning risk-taking decisions with their financial capacity. Regulators may also benefit from the findings when assessing insurers’ ability to withstand adverse conditions and maintain adequate solvency levels. The study concludes that capital stress levels are an important consideration in determining the risk-bearing capacity of insurance companies. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly conduct capital stress assessments and maintain adequate capital buffers against unexpected losses. Continuous actuarial monitoring of capital adequacy, claims exposure, liabilities, and investment risks should also be encouraged to support prudent risk-taking and long-term financial stability.
