Effect of Agricultural Insurance Deductible Levels on Premium Requirements
Abstract
Agricultural insurance deductible levels represent the portion of an insured agricultural loss that must be borne by the policyholder before the insurer becomes responsible for the remaining covered loss. Deductibles are important in agricultural insurance because they influence the amount of risk retained by farmers and the portion transferred to insurers. Changes in deductible levels may therefore affect expected claim payments and the premium requirements associated with agricultural insurance policies. This study will examine the effect of agricultural insurance deductible levels on premium requirements. It will assess how variations in deductible amounts influence the expected claims payable by insurers and the premiums required to provide agricultural insurance coverage. The study will also compare premium requirements under different deductible levels and determine how changes in policyholder loss retention affect actuarial premium estimates. The study will focus on agricultural insurance deductible levels, premium requirements, crop insurance, expected losses, claim payments, loss frequency, loss severity, farmer risk retention, insured crop values, agricultural risks, premium estimation, and actuarial pricing. Relevant agricultural insurance policy and claims data will be examined to identify patterns in deductible structures and their relationship with expected claim costs. Actuarial techniques will be applied to estimate premium requirements under alternative deductible assumptions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical agricultural insurance data, including deductible levels, insured values, claim amounts, claim frequencies, loss severities, crop types, coverage periods, and premium amounts, will be analysed. Descriptive statistics, frequency and severity analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to evaluate the effect of deductible levels on premium requirements. The study is expected to reveal that higher deductible levels may reduce premium requirements because policyholders retain a larger portion of agricultural losses, resulting in lower expected claim payments for insurers. Lower deductible levels may increase premium requirements because insurers assume a greater proportion of covered losses. The magnitude of the effect may depend on crop type, loss frequency, claim severity, insured values, deductible structures, weather risks, and historical agricultural loss experience. The study will be useful to actuaries, agricultural insurance companies, underwriters, farmers, agricultural risk managers, claims managers, regulators, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for determining appropriate deductible structures, estimating premium requirements, managing agricultural insurance exposure, and improving risk-sharing arrangements between farmers and insurers. The findings may also assist insurers in developing premium rates that reflect the level of loss retained by policyholders. The study concludes that agricultural insurance deductible levels are important considerations in determining premium requirements because they influence the proportion of agricultural losses transferred to insurers. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly evaluate deductible structures using historical claims experience, crop risk characteristics, and actuarial loss estimates and apply sensitivity analysis to support appropriate premium determination and sustainable agricultural insurance pricing.
