Analysis of Life Insurance Surrender Value Patterns

Abstract

Life insurance surrender values represent the amounts payable to policyholders who voluntarily terminate eligible policies before their maturity dates. The pattern of surrender values over the duration of a policy is influenced by factors such as premium payments, policy duration, accumulated cash values, investment returns, and applicable deductions. Analyzing these patterns is important for understanding the financial development of life insurance policies and the potential consequences of early policy termination for both insurers and policyholders. The study will analyze the patterns of surrender values across different life insurance policies and policy durations. It will examine how surrender values develop as policies remain in force and how changes in premiums, accumulated funds, and policy duration influence the amounts available to policyholders upon surrender. The study will also assess variations in surrender values across different policy categories and payment arrangements. The analysis will focus on factors such as policy duration, premium contributions, surrender value amounts, cash values, investment returns, policyholder age, premium payment frequency, and applicable policy deductions. Actuarial valuation techniques will be applied to determine how surrender values are calculated and how they change over the life of an insurance contract. Comparative analysis will also be used to identify differences in surrender value patterns across policies with varying characteristics. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant secondary data on life insurance policies, premium payments, policy durations, cash values, surrender values, and policy termination records will be analyzed. Descriptive statistics, trend analysis, surrender value calculations, comparative analysis, and actuarial valuation techniques will be employed to identify patterns and variations in surrender values. The study will also examine the relationship between accumulated policy values and the amounts payable upon surrender. The study is expected to reveal that surrender values generally increase as policies remain in force for longer periods, although the pattern may vary according to policy structure, premium contributions, investment performance, and contractual deductions. Early-stage policies may have relatively low surrender values because of initial expenses and limited accumulation, while longer-duration policies may generate higher surrender values as cash values accumulate. The analysis may also identify substantial differences in surrender value patterns across different policy types. The findings are expected to be useful to life insurance companies, actuaries, policymakers, and policyholders. The study may assist insurers in evaluating surrender value structures, monitoring surrender-related financial risks, and improving policy valuation practices. It may also help actuaries develop more accurate assumptions for estimating surrender liabilities and cash flows, while enabling policyholders to better understand how surrender values change throughout the duration of their policies. The study concludes that the analysis of surrender value patterns provides important information for understanding the financial development and termination behaviour of life insurance policies. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly evaluate surrender value experience and ensure that policyholders receive clear information about how surrender values are determined. Actuaries should also incorporate observed surrender patterns into valuation, reserving, and cash-flow projection models to improve the accuracy of life insurance portfolio management.
