Analysis of Insurance Solvency Under Changing Investment Conditions

Abstract

The study examines insurance solvency under changing investment conditions, focusing on how fluctuations in investment returns, asset values, interest rates, and market conditions may affect the financial strength of insurance companies. Investment activities constitute an important component of insurance operations because insurers rely on investment income and assets to support claims payments, technical provisions, and other financial obligations. Changes in investment conditions can therefore influence available capital and the ability of insurers to maintain adequate solvency positions. The study will analyse the solvency position of insurance companies under changing investment conditions over a specified period. It will examine investment income, investment returns, asset values, available capital, required capital, insurance liabilities, technical provisions, and solvency ratios. The study will assess how variations in investment conditions correspond with changes in insurers’ capital positions and overall solvency levels. Specific attention will be given to changes in interest rates, investment returns, asset valuations, portfolio performance, and market risk exposure. Actuarial and financial indicators will be applied to assess the extent to which changes in investment conditions affect insurers’ capacity to meet their financial obligations. The study will also examine variations in solvency ratios during periods of favourable and unfavourable investment performance. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Secondary data will be obtained from insurance companies, annual financial statements, regulatory publications, and relevant industry reports. Descriptive statistics, trend analysis, investment performance analysis, solvency ratio analysis, and appropriate actuarial and statistical techniques will be employed to evaluate insurers’ solvency under different investment conditions. The study is expected to reveal that changing investment conditions can produce significant variations in insurance solvency positions. Positive investment performance may strengthen available capital and improve solvency levels, while declining asset values, reduced investment returns, or adverse market conditions may place pressure on capital resources. The findings may also indicate that insurers with more resilient investment portfolios are better positioned to maintain adequate solvency during periods of market uncertainty. The findings are expected to provide useful information to insurance companies, actuaries, regulators, investors, and other stakeholders. The study may assist insurers in improving investment risk assessment, capital planning, and asset management practices. Regulators may also benefit from the findings when evaluating the capacity of insurers to withstand investment-related financial pressures while maintaining adequate solvency levels. The study concludes that changing investment conditions are an important consideration in assessing the solvency and financial resilience of insurance companies. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly monitor investment performance, asset values, market risks, and their effects on available capital. Appropriate actuarial stress assessment and prudent investment management should also be encouraged to strengthen solvency protection and support the long-term financial stability of insurance companies.
