Analysis of Available Capital and Required Capital Among Insurers

Abstract

Insurance companies are expected to maintain sufficient financial resources to absorb unexpected losses and meet their obligations to policyholders. Available capital represents the financial resources held by an insurer to support its operations and absorb potential losses, while required capital represents the amount of capital considered necessary to cover the risks undertaken by the insurer. Comparing these two measures provides an important basis for assessing capital adequacy and financial stability. The study examines available capital and required capital among insurance companies. It focuses on the extent to which insurers maintain sufficient available capital in relation to their estimated capital requirements. The study will assess variations in available capital, required capital, capital adequacy levels, solvency positions, and risk exposure among selected insurance companies. The study will analyse key factors influencing the relationship between available and required capital. Measures such as underwriting risk, claims experience, insurance liabilities, investment risk, capital adequacy ratios, and solvency margins will be examined. Actuarial capital models, ratio analysis, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be applied to evaluate the adequacy of insurers’ capital positions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant financial and actuarial data on available capital, required capital, premiums, claims, liabilities, and risk exposure will be collected from selected insurance companies and analysed using descriptive statistics, financial ratios, comparative techniques, and actuarial methods. The available capital of each insurer will be compared with its required capital to determine the extent of capital adequacy and identify potential capital surpluses or deficiencies. The study is expected to reveal differences in the levels of available and required capital among insurers. Insurers with stronger capital positions are expected to demonstrate greater capacity to absorb unexpected losses and maintain adequate solvency levels. The analysis may also identify insurers whose available capital is relatively low compared with their required capital, indicating potential vulnerability to adverse risk events. The findings are expected to provide useful information for insurance companies, actuaries, regulators, and investors in evaluating the financial strength of insurers. The study may support improved capital planning, risk management, solvency monitoring, and regulatory assessment. It may also assist insurance companies in determining appropriate capital buffers and maintaining sufficient resources to support their risk exposures. The study concludes that comparing available capital with required capital provides an important measure of the financial resilience and solvency of insurance companies. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly assess the relationship between available and required capital and strengthen their capital management practices to ensure that financial resources remain adequate in relation to changing risk exposures.
