The Adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Earnings Quality of Listed Firms in Nigeria

Abstract

The adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) represents one of the most significant accounting reforms aimed at enhancing the quality, transparency, comparability, and credibility of financial reporting across jurisdictions. Developed by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), IFRS provides a globally recognized framework for the preparation and presentation of financial statements, thereby facilitating cross-border investment, improving capital market efficiency, and strengthening investor confidence. Nigeria officially adopted IFRS in phases beginning in 2012 to align its financial reporting practices with international best practices and promote greater integration into the global financial system. Since its adoption, listed firms have been required to prepare their financial statements in accordance with IFRS, with the expectation that the standards would improve accounting quality by reducing information asymmetry, limiting earnings manipulation, enhancing disclosure requirements, and increasing the reliability and comparability of financial information. Despite these anticipated benefits, concerns remain regarding the effectiveness of IFRS implementation due to challenges such as inconsistent application of accounting standards, inadequate technical expertise, implementation costs, regulatory compliance issues, and variations in corporate governance practices. Furthermore, empirical findings on the relationship between IFRS adoption and earnings quality have remained mixed, with some studies reporting improvements in financial reporting quality while others suggest limited or insignificant effects. Given the strategic importance of high-quality financial reporting for investor decision-making, market efficiency, and corporate accountability, there is a need for further empirical investigation. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on the earnings quality of listed firms in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Agency Theory, Signaling Theory, and Institutional Theory. Agency Theory posits that the adoption of high-quality accounting standards such as IFRS reduces information asymmetry and agency conflicts between corporate managers and shareholders by improving the transparency and reliability of financial reporting. Signaling Theory argues that firms adopting and effectively implementing IFRS send positive signals to investors and other stakeholders regarding the credibility, transparency, and integrity of their financial statements, thereby enhancing investor confidence and market perception. Institutional Theory explains that organizations adopt internationally accepted accounting standards due to regulatory requirements, professional norms, and institutional pressures aimed at improving legitimacy and conformity with global reporting practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining the relationship between IFRS adoption and earnings quality among listed firms in Nigeria. The study adopts an ex post facto research design utilizing secondary data obtained from the audited annual reports and financial statements of companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), together with relevant publications from the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and other regulatory institutions. A longitudinal panel data approach covering a ten-year period will be employed to examine the relationship between IFRS adoption and earnings quality over time. Purposive sampling will be used to select listed firms with complete and consistent financial reporting information throughout the study period. IFRS adoption will be measured using IFRS compliance index, disclosure quality index, accounting policy compliance, and IFRS implementation quality, while earnings quality will be measured using discretionary accruals, accrual quality, earnings persistence, earnings predictability, earnings smoothness, earnings conservatism, and earnings response coefficient. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics to summarize the characteristics of the study variables, correlation analysis to determine the degree of association among variables, and panel regression techniques, including Fixed Effects and Random Effects models, to estimate the effect of IFRS adoption on earnings quality. The Hausman specification test will determine the most appropriate estimation model, while diagnostic tests including multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation, stationarity, normality, cross-sectional dependence, endogeneity, and model specification tests will be conducted to ensure the validity, consistency, reliability, and robustness of the empirical findings. The study anticipates that the adoption of IFRS will have a significant positive effect on the earnings quality of listed firms in Nigeria. Effective implementation of IFRS is expected to improve the accuracy, transparency, comparability, consistency, and reliability of financial statements by strengthening disclosure requirements and reducing opportunities for earnings manipulation and aggressive accounting practices. IFRS adoption is also anticipated to enhance the relevance and faithful representation of accounting information, thereby enabling investors, creditors, regulators, and other stakeholders to make better-informed economic decisions. Furthermore, firms demonstrating high levels of IFRS compliance are expected to experience greater investor confidence, lower information asymmetry, improved access to domestic and international capital markets, reduced cost of capital, and enhanced corporate reputation. Conversely, inadequate compliance with IFRS requirements, weak enforcement mechanisms, insufficient professional expertise, and ineffective corporate governance may reduce the anticipated benefits of IFRS adoption and negatively affect earnings quality. Consequently, consistent implementation and effective enforcement of IFRS are expected to contribute significantly to improving earnings quality, strengthening financial reporting credibility, and enhancing capital market efficiency in Nigeria. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on financial accounting, corporate reporting, capital markets, and corporate governance by providing robust evidence on the relationship between IFRS adoption and the earnings quality of listed firms in Nigeria. Unlike previous studies that focused primarily on financial reporting quality or isolated accounting outcomes, this research provides a comprehensive evaluation of IFRS adoption using multiple measures of earnings quality within a longitudinal panel data framework. The findings will provide valuable insights for the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), listed firms, investors, auditors, professional accounting bodies, policymakers, financial analysts, and academic researchers regarding the strategic importance of IFRS implementation in promoting transparent and high-quality financial reporting. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening IFRS compliance, enhancing regulatory enforcement, improving professional accounting education and training, reinforcing corporate governance practices, and fostering investor confidence and sustainable capital market development in Nigeria.
