Influence of Working Capital Turnover on the Profitability of Listed Manufacturing Companies in Nigeria

Abstract

Working capital turnover is an important financial efficiency indicator that measures how effectively a company utilizes its working capital to generate sales revenue. It provides an indication of the efficiency with which current assets and current liabilities are managed in supporting business operations and generating revenue. Profitability reflects the ability of a company to generate earnings from its resources and operating activities. Efficient working capital management can improve liquidity, reduce unnecessary financing costs, support uninterrupted production, and enhance profitability. For manufacturing companies, effective working capital utilization is particularly important because substantial resources are committed to inventories, trade receivables, cash, and other current assets throughout the production and operating cycle. In Nigeria, listed manufacturing companies operate in an economic environment characterized by persistent inflation, exchange rate volatility, high energy and transportation costs, rising input prices, supply chain disruptions, high interest rates, and fluctuations in consumer demand. These factors can significantly influence working capital requirements and the ability of manufacturing companies to efficiently convert working capital into sales and profits. Effective management of working capital is therefore essential for maintaining operational continuity, controlling costs, preserving liquidity, and improving financial performance. Regulatory institutions such as the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) promote transparent financial reporting and sound corporate governance practices that enable stakeholders to evaluate the financial health and performance of listed companies. Despite these regulatory efforts, manufacturing companies may experience inefficient working capital utilization, excessive investment in current assets, liquidity pressures, or inadequate working capital, all of which may affect profitability. Although previous studies have examined working capital management and corporate financial performance, empirical evidence regarding the influence of working capital turnover on the profitability of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria remains limited and inconclusive. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of working capital turnover on the profitability of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Working Capital Management Theory, Cash Conversion Cycle Theory, and Resource-Based View (RBV). Working Capital Management Theory emphasizes the importance of maintaining an appropriate balance between liquidity and profitability through efficient management of current assets and current liabilities. Cash Conversion Cycle Theory explains that efficient movement of working capital through inventory, receivables, and payables can reduce the time resources remain tied up in operations and improve cash generation. The Resource-Based View suggests that effective utilization of working capital represents an organizational capability that can improve operational efficiency, resource productivity, and competitive advantage. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining the relationship between working capital turnover and profitability of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative research design using a structured questionnaire administered to chief financial officers, finance managers, management accountants, financial controllers, treasury managers, inventory managers, credit managers, internal auditors, external auditors, and other professionals involved in working capital and financial management within selected listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of relevant manufacturing subsectors listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). Working capital turnover will be measured using the relationship between sales revenue and working capital, efficiency of current asset utilization, working capital utilization rate, speed of conversion of working capital into revenue, cash conversion efficiency, and management of current assets and current liabilities, while profitability will be measured using Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), net profit margin, operating profit margin, earnings per share, and profit growth. Primary data collected from respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize respondents' demographic characteristics and perceptions regarding working capital turnover and profitability. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the influence of working capital turnover on profitability. The measurement model will be evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to establish the reliability and validity of the research instrument. Additional diagnostic tests, including multicollinearity assessment, common method bias analysis, and model fit indices such as the Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR), will be conducted to ensure the adequacy, consistency, reliability, and robustness of the structural model. The study anticipates that working capital turnover will have a significant positive influence on the profitability of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Efficient working capital turnover is expected to enable manufacturing companies to generate greater sales revenue from the working capital invested in day-to-day operations. Higher efficiency in the utilization of current assets and liabilities may reduce the amount of capital tied up in the operating cycle, improve liquidity, lower financing costs, and increase the availability of funds for productive activities. Effective working capital turnover may also support uninterrupted production by ensuring adequate availability of raw materials, efficient management of inventories, timely collection of receivables, and appropriate utilization of supplier credit. Conversely, inefficient working capital turnover may indicate excessive investment in current assets, slow inventory movement, delayed receivables collection, poor cash management, or inadequate working capital, potentially resulting in higher financing costs and reduced profitability. However, excessively high working capital turnover may also indicate insufficient working capital, which could create liquidity pressures and disrupt production. Therefore, maintaining an appropriate and efficiently managed level of working capital turnover is expected to contribute significantly to sustainable profitability among listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on working capital management, management accounting, corporate finance, and financial performance by providing comprehensive evidence on the relationship between working capital turnover and profitability of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Unlike previous studies that broadly examined working capital management or individual working capital components, this research specifically evaluates working capital turnover as a determinant of profitability using primary data and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings will provide valuable insights for listed manufacturing companies, financial managers, management accountants, treasury managers, inventory managers, credit managers, auditors, investors, the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), professional accounting bodies, policymakers, regulators, and academic researchers regarding the importance of efficient working capital utilization. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for improving working capital policies, strengthening inventory management, accelerating receivables collection, optimizing supplier credit, improving cash flow planning, reducing unnecessary financing costs, and maintaining an appropriate balance between liquidity and profitability to promote sustainable financial performance among listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria.
