Impact of Sales Growth on the Financial Performance of Listed Consumer Goods Companies in Nigeria

Abstract

Sales growth is an important indicator of business expansion that reflects the increase in a company's sales revenue over a specified period. It provides an indication of a company's ability to expand its customer base, increase market demand, improve distribution, strengthen competitive position, and generate higher revenue from its operations. Financial performance reflects the extent to which a company efficiently utilizes its resources to generate sustainable profits, maintain financial stability, and create value for shareholders. For consumer goods companies, sales growth is particularly important because the sector is highly dependent on consumer demand, pricing strategies, distribution networks, product availability, and purchasing power. In Nigeria, listed consumer goods companies operate in an economic environment characterized by persistent inflation, exchange rate volatility, rising production and distribution costs, high energy expenses, changing consumer preferences, and declining real purchasing power. These conditions can significantly affect product demand, selling prices, sales volumes, revenue growth, and ultimately corporate financial performance. Effective strategies for sustaining sales growth are therefore essential for maintaining profitability and long-term business viability. Regulatory institutions such as the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) promote transparent financial reporting and sound corporate governance practices that enable stakeholders to evaluate the performance and growth prospects of listed companies. Despite these regulatory efforts, consumer goods companies differ in their ability to sustain sales growth and translate increased revenue into improved profitability. Although previous studies have examined firm growth, revenue growth, and financial performance, empirical evidence regarding the impact of sales growth on the financial performance of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria remains limited and inconclusive. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of sales growth on the financial performance of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Resource-Based View (RBV), Market-Based View, and Signaling Theory. The Resource-Based View suggests that companies possessing valuable resources and capabilities, such as strong brands, efficient distribution networks, effective marketing systems, and innovative products, can achieve sustained sales growth and competitive advantage. The Market-Based View emphasizes the importance of market demand, customer relationships, competitive positioning, and market expansion in improving sales and corporate performance. Signaling Theory suggests that consistent sales growth may provide investors and other stakeholders with a positive signal concerning a company's market acceptance, operational capability, growth prospects, and future earnings potential. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining the relationship between sales growth and financial performance of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative research design using a structured questionnaire administered to chief financial officers, finance managers, management accountants, financial controllers, sales managers, marketing managers, business development managers, internal auditors, external auditors, and other professionals involved in financial, sales, and operational management within selected listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria. A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of relevant consumer goods subsectors listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). Sales growth will be measured using percentage growth in sales revenue, sales volume growth, customer base expansion, market expansion, product demand, revenue consistency, and effectiveness of sales strategies, while financial performance will be measured using Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), net profit margin, operating profit margin, earnings per share, and profit growth. Primary data collected from respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize respondents' demographic characteristics and perceptions regarding sales growth and financial performance. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the impact of sales growth on financial performance. The measurement model will be evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to establish the reliability and validity of the research instrument. Additional diagnostic tests, including multicollinearity assessment, common method bias analysis, and model fit indices such as the Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR), will be conducted to ensure the adequacy, consistency, reliability, and robustness of the structural model. The study anticipates that sales growth will have a significant positive impact on the financial performance of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria. Sustained growth in sales is expected to increase revenue generation, improve economies of scale, strengthen market position, and provide companies with greater resources to finance their operations and investments. Higher sales volumes may also enable consumer goods companies to spread fixed production and distribution costs across a larger volume of products, potentially improving operating margins and profitability. Consistent sales growth may further strengthen investor confidence by demonstrating strong product demand, customer acceptance, effective marketing strategies, and favourable growth prospects. However, sales growth may not automatically translate into higher profitability where increases in revenue are accompanied by disproportionately higher production costs, marketing expenses, distribution expenses, discounts, or credit losses. Excessive reliance on price reductions to stimulate sales may also increase revenue while weakening profit margins. Therefore, the financial benefits of sales growth are expected to depend on the company's ability to manage costs, maintain appropriate pricing, optimize distribution, and convert increased sales into sustainable earnings. Overall, efficient and sustainable sales growth is expected to contribute significantly to improved financial performance among listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on corporate growth, management accounting, marketing, financial management, and corporate performance by providing comprehensive evidence on the relationship between sales growth and financial performance of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria. Unlike previous studies that broadly examined firm growth or revenue performance, this research specifically evaluates sales growth as a determinant of financial performance using primary data and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings will provide valuable insights for listed consumer goods companies, financial managers, accountants, sales and marketing managers, auditors, investors, the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), professional accounting bodies, policymakers, regulators, and academic researchers regarding the importance of sustainable sales expansion. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for improving sales strategies, strengthening customer retention, expanding distribution networks, developing competitive pricing policies, managing sales-related costs, improving product availability, and ensuring that sales growth translates into sustainable profitability and financial performance among listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria.
