Effect of Dividend Payout Ratio on Shareholders' Wealth of Listed Companies in Nigeria

Abstract

Dividend payout policy is an important corporate financial decision because of its implications for shareholders' returns, market valuation, investment decisions, and long-term wealth creation. The dividend payout ratio represents the proportion of a company's earnings distributed to shareholders as dividends relative to the earnings available for distribution. An effective dividend policy enables companies to balance the interests of shareholders seeking current income with the need to retain earnings for investment, expansion, and future growth. For listed companies, dividend decisions are particularly important because investors often use dividend payments as signals of corporate profitability, financial stability, and future prospects. In Nigeria, listed companies operate in an increasingly challenging economic environment characterized by inflationary pressures, exchange rate volatility, rising operating costs, changing interest rates, and economic uncertainties. These conditions influence corporate earnings and the capacity of companies to maintain consistent dividend payments. The Nigerian capital market provides an important avenue for wealth creation through equity investment, making the relationship between dividend payout decisions and shareholders' wealth particularly relevant to investors, corporate managers, regulators, and policymakers. Regulatory institutions such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), and the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) promote transparent financial reporting and sound corporate governance practices that support informed dividend decisions. Despite these regulatory efforts, listed companies differ substantially in their dividend payout practices, with some maintaining stable dividend payments while others retain significant portions of earnings for reinvestment. Although previous studies have examined dividend policy and firm performance, empirical evidence regarding the effect of dividend payout ratio on shareholders' wealth of listed companies in Nigeria remains limited and inconclusive. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of dividend payout ratio on shareholders' wealth of listed companies in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Dividend Relevance Theory, Signaling Theory, and Agency Theory. Dividend Relevance Theory argues that dividend decisions can influence firm value and shareholders' wealth because investors may prefer certain levels of current dividend income. Signaling Theory explains that dividend payments convey information about management's expectations concerning the company's future earnings and financial stability, thereby influencing investors' perceptions and market valuation. Agency Theory suggests that dividend payments can reduce the amount of free cash flow under managerial control, thereby limiting potential agency conflicts and aligning managers' interests with those of shareholders. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining the relationship between dividend payout ratio and shareholders' wealth of listed companies in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative research design using a structured questionnaire administered to chief financial officers, finance managers, accountants, financial controllers, company secretaries, investment analysts, portfolio managers, stockbrokers, fund managers, shareholders' representatives, and other professionals involved in corporate financial management and investment decisions within selected listed companies in Nigeria. A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of companies operating in the financial services, manufacturing, consumer goods, industrial goods, oil and gas, telecommunications, agriculture, healthcare, and other sectors listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). Dividend payout ratio will be measured using dividend per share relative to earnings per share, dividend distribution consistency, dividend payment stability, earnings distribution level, and dividend growth, while shareholders' wealth will be measured using share price appreciation, market capitalization, total shareholder return, earnings per share growth, and overall investment value. Primary data collected from respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize respondents' demographic characteristics and perceptions regarding dividend payout ratio and shareholders' wealth. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the effect of dividend payout ratio on shareholders' wealth. The measurement model will be evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to establish the reliability and validity of the research instrument. Additional diagnostic tests, including multicollinearity assessment, common method bias analysis, and model fit indices such as the Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR), will be conducted to ensure the adequacy, consistency, reliability, and robustness of the structural model. The study anticipates that dividend payout ratio will have a significant positive effect on shareholders' wealth of listed companies in Nigeria. Higher and more stable dividend payouts are expected to enhance investor confidence, increase the attractiveness of company shares, strengthen market valuation, and provide shareholders with predictable investment returns. Companies that maintain consistent dividend payments are also anticipated to send positive signals regarding their profitability, liquidity, financial stability, and future earnings prospects. Furthermore, an appropriate dividend payout policy is expected to reduce agency conflicts, improve corporate reputation, strengthen investor loyalty, and contribute to long-term shareholder wealth creation. However, excessively high dividend payouts may limit the funds available for profitable investment opportunities, expansion, technological advancement, and business growth. Conversely, excessively low or inconsistent dividend payments may reduce investor confidence and negatively affect market valuation. Therefore, an optimal dividend payout ratio is expected to contribute significantly to maximizing shareholders' wealth while maintaining adequate internal financing for sustainable corporate growth. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on corporate finance, accounting, investment management, and capital market studies by providing comprehensive evidence on the relationship between dividend payout ratio and shareholders' wealth of listed companies in Nigeria. Unlike previous studies that broadly examined dividend policy or corporate performance, this research specifically evaluates dividend payout ratio as a determinant of shareholders' wealth using primary data and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings will provide valuable insights for listed companies, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), shareholders, institutional investors, financial analysts, professional accounting bodies, policymakers, regulators, and academic researchers regarding the strategic importance of dividend payout decisions in enhancing shareholder value. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for developing sustainable dividend policies, balancing dividend distribution with retained earnings, improving corporate financial planning, enhancing investor communication, and promoting long-term shareholders' wealth among listed companies in Nigeria.
