Effect of Cybersecurity Risk Management on Accounting Information Quality of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria

Abstract

The increasing digitalization of banking operations has significantly transformed accounting and financial information systems, enabling Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) to process transactions, generate financial reports, and deliver banking services with greater speed and efficiency. However, this digital transformation has also exposed banks to growing cybersecurity threats, including data breaches, ransomware attacks, phishing, malware, insider threats, identity theft, and unauthorized access to financial information systems. As financial institutions increasingly rely on electronic accounting systems, cloud computing, mobile banking, internet banking, and integrated enterprise resource planning (ERP) platforms, the protection of accounting information has become a strategic priority. Cybersecurity risk management encompasses the policies, procedures, technologies, and control mechanisms implemented to identify, assess, mitigate, monitor, and respond to cyber threats that could compromise the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of accounting information. In Nigeria, the banking sector has witnessed rapid technological advancement driven by financial technology (FinTech) innovations, digital payment systems, regulatory reforms, and increasing customer demand for electronic banking services. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), and other regulatory institutions have strengthened cybersecurity frameworks to enhance financial system resilience and protect sensitive financial data. Despite these initiatives, Deposit Money Banks continue to face increasing cyber risks that threaten the reliability, accuracy, timeliness, and security of accounting information. Weak cybersecurity practices may result in data manipulation, financial fraud, unauthorized transactions, inaccurate financial records, regulatory sanctions, reputational damage, and loss of stakeholder confidence. Conversely, effective cybersecurity risk management enhances information security, strengthens internal controls, supports regulatory compliance, and improves the quality of accounting information. Although previous studies have examined cybersecurity and information systems security, empirical evidence on the effect of cybersecurity risk management on accounting information quality in Nigerian Deposit Money Banks remains limited and inconclusive. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of cybersecurity risk management on the accounting information quality of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) Framework, the DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model, and the Resource-Based View (RBV). The Technology-Organization-Environment Framework explains that the successful implementation of cybersecurity risk management depends on technological capabilities, organizational readiness, and external environmental factors, including regulatory requirements and competitive pressures. The DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model posits that high-quality information systems, supported by effective security controls, enhance information quality, system reliability, user satisfaction, and organizational performance. The Resource-Based View argues that cybersecurity capabilities constitute valuable strategic resources capable of protecting organizational assets, strengthening information quality, and sustaining competitive advantage. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining the relationship between cybersecurity risk management and accounting information quality in Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative research design using a structured questionnaire administered to accountants, internal auditors, external auditors, chief financial officers, finance managers, information technology managers, cybersecurity professionals, risk management officers, compliance officers, and other personnel responsible for accounting information systems within selected Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of respondents across various operational and managerial functions within the banking sector. Primary data collected from respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize respondents' demographic characteristics and perceptions regarding cybersecurity risk management and accounting information quality. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the effect of cybersecurity risk management on accounting information quality. The measurement model will be evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to establish the reliability and validity of the research instrument. Additional diagnostic tests, including multicollinearity assessment, common method bias analysis, and model fit indices such as the Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR), will be conducted to ensure the adequacy, consistency, and robustness of the structural model. The study anticipates that cybersecurity risk management will have a significant positive effect on the accounting information quality of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. Effective cybersecurity risk management is expected to enhance the accuracy, reliability, completeness, timeliness, confidentiality, and integrity of accounting information by protecting financial information systems from cyber threats and unauthorized access. Strong cybersecurity controls, including multi-factor authentication, encryption, intrusion detection systems, access control mechanisms, continuous system monitoring, cybersecurity awareness training, and incident response planning, are anticipated to reduce the incidence of data breaches, accounting fraud, system disruptions, and financial information manipulation. Furthermore, effective cybersecurity risk management is expected to strengthen internal control systems, improve compliance with financial reporting standards and regulatory requirements, enhance stakeholder confidence, and support evidence-based managerial decision-making. Deposit Money Banks that maintain robust cybersecurity frameworks are therefore expected to produce higher-quality accounting information characterized by greater transparency, credibility, consistency, and reliability. Conversely, banks with weak cybersecurity controls may experience compromised accounting records, financial reporting errors, operational disruptions, increased fraud risks, regulatory penalties, and diminished public confidence. Consequently, investment in cybersecurity risk management is expected to play a critical role in improving accounting information quality and ensuring the long-term stability of Nigeria's banking sector. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on accounting information systems, cybersecurity, banking, and information technology by providing robust evidence on the relationship between cybersecurity risk management and accounting information quality among Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. Unlike previous studies that focused broadly on information security or cyber risk, this research specifically examines cybersecurity risk management as a strategic determinant of accounting information quality within the banking industry. The findings will provide valuable insights for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Deposit Money Banks, financial regulators, auditors, professional accounting bodies, cybersecurity professionals, policymakers, technology providers, and academic researchers regarding the strategic importance of cybersecurity in promoting high-quality accounting information and financial reporting. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening cybersecurity governance, enhancing information security infrastructure, improving regulatory compliance, promoting continuous cybersecurity awareness and professional training, reinforcing internal control systems, and fostering reliable accounting information and sustainable banking operations in Nigeria.
